They've only been in 5 mins and so far...

Even if it did occur, Lib-Dem/Labour still wouldn't have had the majority seats, they'd have merely caught up with the Conservatives, they'd have had to rope other parties into it, it just wouldn't have been pretty.

Tories 305 seats
Labour 258 seats
Lib Dems 57 seats

when I went to school 258 + 57 was more than 305.

Showing a lack of understanding here I feel ;-)

... they have announced the following:

Substantial rise in income tax allowances for lowest paid from April 2011

New tax on financial transactions, clampdown on "unacceptable" bonuses

Investment to reduce class sizes for children from poorer backgrounds

Cut in number of MPs and equal size constituencies

Right of the public to "recall" corrupt MPs

Review of Scottish MPs voting on England-only legislation

No further powers ceded to EU without referendum

NHS spending to rise in real terms every year of the Parliament

Great Repeal Bill including abolition of ID cards

Restore the link between the state pension and earnings from April 2011

Benefits to be conditional on willingness to work

Tax break for married couples and civil partners

A 5% pay cut for ministers & a pay freeze for the duration of this parliament

Some of these announcements must really be pissing off some of you bitter losers on here :-)

At last we have a governement in touch with the people of its country.

I could point out that many of them such as reduction in class sizes, linking pensions with pay, clamping down on bankers bonuses among others are Lib Dem policies. But I like some of the Conservative policies on benefits and Scottish MPs not being allowed to vote. However cutting pay of MPs only seeks to attract those who have more money to the job (e.g. Conservatives) or force MPs into other things to earn money. And referenduming anything on the EU only brings out nationlistic views, despite the fact are coutry would be far worse off without EU support.

Also this is basically a 'New Manifesto' so the amount of this stuff which actually gets put into law will be vastly reduced I think

I can't really argue with your first point tbh with you but now that it's happened I really do think we've got a real chance of genuine change. I do think it's very naive to think that Labour didn't want a coalition because they weren't willing to compromise their ideals. I think Labour knew a 'rainbow' coalition just couldn't work.
Mate, I honestly hope it works. We need stability.

We are in complete agreement here. That's why I said on another thread that whatever peoples political leanings everyone should hope for the sake of the country, their jobs, their kids, that this coalition works.

I got an immediate reply from someone saying they couldn't wait for it to fail and that they'd be pissing themselves laughing about it. If it fails nobody will be doing that :-(

That reply was from me! I really don't like this shower but if they fail, we all fail.

At least you do recognise it mate. We need this to work.

Gordon's not bothered ....

he's got himself a new job already!

All sounds good to me - apart from tax breaks to married couples and civil partnerships because it stinks of social engineering. This coalition clearly has the potential to pass some decent legislation. However, two points; 1. Generally governments make it their business to announce popular policies whilst trying to be quiet about the less popular policies for some reason; 2. Let's see how much of it is implemented and, quite importantly, how well it is implemented. Governments are perfectly capable of screwing up even legislation which has benign intent.

-- Thu May 13, 2010 4:00 pm --

I also think many weren't up for PR and wanted to be in opposition whilst the tories take flak for the country's continuing economic difficulties and recessionary pains. In fact, I'd say these two reasons were more important. As a party I think they've decided it's a case of short-term loss, long-term gain. That's based on precisely fuck all though. It's just my cynical assessment.

I like, especially that about Jocks voting on English policies, imo we should be able to vote in Welsh, Scottish and Irish elections if all of those are able to vote in ours.
Um, you can. Westminster can over-write everything done by devolved governments at anytime it chooses to do so, an important fact considering this Government is an English government (apart from those embarrassments in Dumfries).

Just another step to show that the Union doesn't work.

I'm not a follower of any party, they're all conmen, but it's a little early to crow either way isn't it? It's all well and good saying what they'll do, but you don't want to make a bad impression on your first day.

It would be wise of everyone to wait a while and see what actually gets implemented before they go preening and chest thumping.

I agree with you! I just get pissed off with those types I mentioned above, especially the ones who use lies & half truths in their arguments.

You mean like politicians?
