Thiago Alcantara

Are we sure these taxes apply for this deal? I haven't heard them mentioned even once by any local or Spanish journalist.

intra-EU is 100% refundable for a UK VAT registered entity such as us, so costs nothing ultimately; cannot see any other tax would be legally applicable (and if so it would be applicable to all Spanish transfers)

My understanding of how Spanish release clauses work is as follows...

* A team and player can negotiate a contract with a release clause. Let's say 20 million Euros for example.

* If a club outside of Spain activates the release clause, they have to pay the release clause. There might or might not be taxes on the clause; however, there appears to be recompense on that front.

* If a club inside Spain activates the clause, the club who owns the player's contract may opt to either allow the purchasing club to pay the clause OR force the player to pay the clause meaning the player is also on the line for taxes if the new club gives him the money to pay the clause.

This makes triggering most release clauses inside Spain prohibitive. Not so much for outside clubs.

i may be wrong but i was under the impression that its the law in spain that contracts must have a buy out clause so everyone has one.

Looks like we're stuck with Barry (refusing to leave) and Garcia (no one will want him) so tempting someone like Thiago into such an overstocked area would be difficult even if we were going balls out for him.

completely disagree with your comment of "stuck with Barry". I know that everyone wants lots of shiny new toys but Barry is not one to throw away in response to such urges

Well two newspapers appear to have been briefed by the club and are running believable looking stories. This is the DT version:

Gareth Barry is prepared to see out the final 12 months of his contract at Manchester City, despite being told he can leave the Etihad Stadium this summer.

The former England midfielder, a £12m signing from Aston Villa four years ago, is yet to meet new manager Manuel Pellegrini to discuss his future at the club.

But with director of football Txiki Begiristain leading City’s squad overhaul this summer, Barry’s representatives have been informed that the club are prepared to listen to offers for the 32-year-old.

The £30m signing of Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho from Shakhtar Donetsk, combined with the club’s desire for Jack Rodwell and Javi Garcia to make a greater contribution to the first-team next season, has left Barry facing reduced opportunities under Pellegrini, who officially starts work on Monday.

Barry is ready to fight for his place, however, and reject interest from a number of Premier League clubs in order to be involved in Champions League football with City.

Despite Mark Hughes’s admiration of Barry – Hughes signed the player during his time as City manager – it is understood that the Welshman will not make a move to take him to Stoke due to the club’s determination to reduce the wage bill and average age of the squad at the Britannia Stadium.

City are battling to make Isco their second signing of the summer, with Real Madrid increasingly confident of luring the Spain U-21 international to the Bernabéu.

With Manuel Pellegrini confirmed as manager last week, City had believed that they had beaten Real to the Malaga midfielder’s signature.

But the personal intervention of Real director of football Zinedine Zidane is understood to have persuaded Isco to remain in Spain by moving to Madrid.

It's actually 140 grand they're saying! All from a fake United ITK account -> retweeted thousands of times -> soon to be in the Daily Mail and the latest rag urban myth.

And of course they are paying him threepence halfpenny and he is going there because of their history.........Yawn.
