Things that never really took off

The best format rarely wins i.e. Betamax, the cheapest usually does because it's the first people buy in numbers. Sony, as the backer of the Blu-Ray, manufacturer of the PS3, and heavily involved in the movie business, winning the format war was of prime importance. It was so important that they were prepared to sell PS3s at a loss to get it out there.

Microsoft, as already outlined, had none of those factors pushing it. They simply wanted to provide an add-on option to customers who could be persuaded into buying the Xbox over the PS3 by offering it. They had nothing invested. They didn't own the format so there were no royalties or intellectual property at stake. They're not involved in the movie business either so that didn't matter.

Did they back the right horse skash?
They didn't back a horse is what I'm saying, so right or wrong doesn't come into it.

I know but Blu Ray was and is actually better. It always was so HD DVD would struggle as we know with these things there can be only one and like you said Sony played the game

Oh rheealy:

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/87951/microsoft-spotlights-hd-dvd-at-tech-show" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/87951/micro ... -tech-show</a>

Microsoft - along with NEC and Intel is backing the Toshiba-driven rival format.

Microsoft's forthcoming Vista version of Windows will include HD DVD support for free, whereas PC makers must pay about US$30 (S$49.54) per drive in Blu-ray royalties.

In September, Microsoft and Intel raised the profile of the battle between HD DVD and Blu-ray when they announced that they backed HD DVD.

I can post a dozen more if you need.

HD DVD Microsoft backed the wrong horse on that one.
They didn't. Sony was just more committed to Blu-Ray and sold PS3s at a loss to ensure victory in a format war. If you play poker, Sony was all-in whereas Microsoft was playing pot odds with a drawing hand.

Well and Blu Ray was better
Actually, the quality of HD DVD was far superior to Blu Ray.

Make no mistake, I'm glad the far superior format won for a change and its superfluous to me anyway as I have a Blu-Ray/HD DVD drive combo that I still have which I bought in about 2006/7 for £150. I had nothing invested in the format war either because whoever won I was picking up cheap deals. HD DVDs for £3 or £4, brand new films in HD far cheaper than on actual DVD, it was awesome. My Blu-Ray collection has only recently taken over my HD DVD collection.
