Things to see and do in New York

10 days is quite a long time so take it nice and easy. I thought 4 days wasn’t enough but a couple more would have done.

Maybe have a couple of days out by train. Philadelphia is only around an hour away and you could do one of the beach resorts on a sunny day. Rockaway Beach is popular. 1hr 15 by train.
Philadelphia is a fucking brilliant city.

Or up into the Hudson valley, West point , breweries.

315 Bowery Manhatten, CBGB club, iconic music pub/club, closed forever now but building still there with its famed canopy, must get a picture of yourself stood outside it, birthplace of many great bands
On the wife’s list already along with St Marks (57 club) and the Gramercy Park hotel- her brother played New York in 1979 and stayed at that hotel.

I preferred Philly over NY last month during CWC. Met some mental people in Philly, the class themselves as America’s Millwall, but don’t let that put you off as they’re great fun. I really liked New York too. I was walking around 20 miles a day so I got to see everything I wanted to by foot. Go to Au Cheval for their signature burger, it’s ace.

Yes did from near the new WTC to well into Central Park and back a few times on foot last time I stayed there. It’s a great city to explore on foot. Especially if you like a drink!

Walking in big cities is a no brainer if you are able to do it. I laugh at people getting on the tube at Leicester Square and getting off at Covent Garden when it’s about 300 yards ! The steps at CG are more than that!

If you care, and get the chance, get off Manhattan island and see some quintessential NY places like Coney Island (ride the Cyclone, walk the Boardwalk, eat some Nathan’s and maybe even get your toes wet at the beach!

Conversely, in the other direction, take a boat trip up the Hudson River Valley and hop off at one/some of the beautiful, old New York towns and villages that are dotted along the shore. It’s a beautiful boat ride (you will be going opposite the direction Sully landed!) and you’ll go under some cool bridges and may enjoy a nice respite from the hustle, bustle, noise, emergency sirens…and smell…of Manhattan.

P.S. There was mention of renting bikes. No problem in Central Park, but absolute madness on the roads, esp with you instinctively looking on the wrong direction for traffic!!!

P.P.S. Just because it has a reputation, don’t miss out on going to Times Square! It’s really close to Rockefeller Centre and a few other things, so wander through at least for a few pics! Maybe even take in a matinee show, esp if it’s 90-100F outside.

P.P.S. Your pound has recently been stretched by the Orange Moron, so push the boat out a bit and enjoy the exchange rate while you’ve got it in your favor! Things cost what they cost, so get over the “fuck, that’s expensive!” early. Buy…don’t buy…your choice, but “that’s expensive” gets old and steals your joy. Do or don’t, but don’t whine about it, esp to loved ones, whose joy it also steals!”

ENJOY!!!

My first visit to NY, 1983 aged 20.
Stupidly a few months before I went I watched this film and it shit me up no end. I imagined every street corner had a gang, face painted up going around with baseball bats and roller skates twatting visitors…….
A few years ago I went for a long weekend and visited the park where the big gang meet up at the beginning was.
And yes, I stood at the top end and shouted “Can you dig it?”
