Things to see and do in New York

10 days is quite a long time so take it nice and easy. I thought 4 days wasn’t enough but a couple more would have done.

Maybe have a couple of days out by train. Philadelphia is only around an hour away and you could do one of the beach resorts on a sunny day. Rockaway Beach is popular. 1hr 15 by train.
10 days is a long time…I’d be tempted to get up to see Niagra falls

Eh up blues

Me, the missus and our 14 year old lad are off to the Big Apple for 10 days next week.

There’s a few must visit places on our list of things to see and do but I’d interested to hear of any other suggestions from those of ya who’ve been and done it.

Cheers

I just.divided manhatten up into blocks on the map and walked and walked and walked everyday and covered everything that way.

Great place to visit

If you care, and get the chance, get off Manhattan island and see some quintessential NY places like Coney Island (ride the Cyclone, walk the Boardwalk, eat some Nathan’s and maybe even get your toes wet at the beach!

Conversely, in the other direction, take a boat trip up the Hudson River Valley and hop off at one/some of the beautiful, old New York towns and villages that are dotted along the shore. It’s a beautiful boat ride (you will be going opposite the direction Sully landed!) and you’ll go under some cool bridges and may enjoy a nice respite from the hustle, bustle, noise, emergency sirens…and smell…of Manhattan.

P.S. There was mention of renting bikes. No problem in Central Park, but absolute madness on the roads, esp with you instinctively looking on the wrong direction for traffic!!!

P.P.S. Just because it has a reputation, don’t miss out on going to Times Square! It’s really close to Rockefeller Centre and a few other things, so wander through at least for a few pics! Maybe even take in a matinee show, esp if it’s 90-100F outside.

P.P.S. Your pound has recently been stretched by the Orange Moron, so push the boat out a bit and enjoy the exchange rate while you’ve got it in your favor! Things cost what they cost, so get over the “fuck, that’s expensive!” early. Buy…don’t buy…your choice, but “that’s expensive” gets old and steals your joy. Do or don’t, but don’t whine about it, esp to loved ones, whose joy it also steals!”

ENJOY!!!
Some great tips…love the PPS and will leave my Victor Meldrew head at home :-)

Following this (and will catch up on this tomorrow morning).

Going for ten days in September.
Always wanted to visit since I was a kid (perhaos not the est time to visit the US atm).

Im going with my youngest (son - 15) and my eldest daughter and staying in Hoboken across rhe Hudson in New Jersey).

Not sure if covered on here but tad anxious over the anti Trump content on my socials (not sure it’s yet required to drop any social media accounts in the ESTA form?)

Get a subway pass. Well worth it. Walk the high line and have a meal/few beers in the meat packers quarter. Do top of the rock, it’s amazing. If there’s any sport on go and see it. The helicopter to Statue of Liberty was worth it too. There’s a good golf driving range near there also! Twin towers memorial is humbling but also worth a look

I’ll keep an eye on this thread because I’m meant to be going in December with my lady friend. I’ve never been to America.
NYC in December is a different animal!

Book yourself a few shows for the evenings, as well as some dinner reservations, because outdoor activities are greatly reduced and might be significantly less enjoyable.

That said, you can join the throngs at 30 Rock for the ice skating beneath the tree!!! That’s a memory for life!

A broadway show at Christmas sounds amazing. I’ll watch people ice skate with having 2 left feet :). I’m not sure where we’re staying at the moment, but what decent eateries are dotted around? I really need to sample a proper New York pastrami sarnie. Thanks for the advice and it’s much appreciated. Do you think boat trips would still be happening? Or will the surrounding water be iced over or too cold to do?

Katz is unbeatable. It’s expensive but it’s so good. Top tip if you go, ask for it juicy and tip the meat cutter. Also the Dr Browns Cherry soda is amazing from there.

If you want the evening view of the Manhattan skyline then I'd suggest dinner at Peter Luger's Steakhouse near the Williamsburg Bridge in Brooklyn. It's pricey but worth it. You can walk over that bridge or I think there's a water taxi that'll take you to the Brooklyn Bridge.

Alternatively, head north to the Queensboro (59th St) Bridge and get the aerial tram back.

Book this place pal, it’s great even snowed when we were up there, right in Times Square decent views. You’ll probably need to book early as well.
