Thinking of immigrating

For those thinking of leaving for the Utopia of Australia make sure you live in the correct suburb

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...rom-Australia-for-living-in-wrong-suburb.html

George and Lana Breen, from Dundee in Scotland, had a visa which required them to live in a regional area but accidentally moved to a suburb which – they discovered – was deemed to be in a city. They have lived in Australia for five years but are due to be deported on March 7.

"We've made an awful lot of friends here and to be sent home I think it's a bit of a disgrace", Mr Breen, a bricklayer, told Channel Seven.

The couple, who live in a suburb south of the city of Brisbane, discovered they were living in the wrong zone under immigration laws when they applied for permanent residency two years ago. They received their visa under a government scheme to lure migrants to regional areas.

But Mr and Mrs Breen moved to the suburb of Calamvale, 2.49 miles from Browns Plains, where they were supposed to live.

A spokesman for the Immigration Department said: "Their particular visa applies to those working and residing in regional Australia and of course regional Australia is determined in our case by postcodes".

Mrs Breen, a disability care worker, said the couple moved to the wrong place accidentally and had been unable to find a home in their selected area.

"When we heard from the Immigration that we'd broken the conditions of the visa we were shattered", she said.

The couple reportedly lost an appeal to the Migration Review Tribunal and are due to be deported to Britain on March 7.

"We work hard, we've put in a lot of money, we've set up home here, we've got vehicles and this is home", said Mr Breen.

Ian Mulvey, whose disabled son has been cared for by Mrs Breen for three years, told Channel Seven: "She's just made a significant difference to his life. The Australian adage, give someone a fair go, that just got blown out of the water with all this."

whilst I feel a bit sorry for them , they shouldve bought a house in Browns Plains, Ive just checked and there are loads of houses for sale there, they obviously were trying to be a bit sneaky and it didnt work......this does seem a bit petty but there has to be rules and cut off points when a regional (rural area) meets a suburban area, my mate lives in Browns Plains and its fine.

No it's not, it's in Queensland.

I agree rules are rules and they tried it on and got caught. Harsh but...

Out of interest are all the immigrants only allowed to settle in certain areas?

No, there are many different types of visa, with different requirements.
This video should be helpful to anyone thinking of coming to Aus.

And, that is not to say the USA would be my first choice if I was to do it again, as Oz and ESPECIALLY NZ look like the last, best unspoiled civilized places on earth. I will definitely visit NZ in the near future and might even retire down there, as long as the satellite TV is decent for the EPL! However, might not be able to hold on to my seasoncard if I ever do make that move, as it is a bit further to travel than from Chicago to Manchester, which is a quick 7 hours overnight!

I've not been out down under yet myself, but am looking to at some point.. let me know when you're planning a trip

;o)

Might be as early as April, as we have some SFO-SYD trips and even some SYD-MEL day trips, too!

However, NZ would certainly be first on the list! Have a friend who lives in NZ and COMMUTES to work in Chicago for part of the year!! Sends me pictures of him lounging, feet up towards the sunset, with a glass in hand and taunts me at times like this....with 12 inches of snow having just fallen in Chicago! Ploughed THREE fucking times today!!

Wife has Kawarau Bungee on our Bucket List, so we HAVE TO go! maybe after a few days in Bora Bora?!

Just checked via emirates uk website and a man-per return is £862 for the 1st/19 nov and the same dates per-man return is $2062, doesn't seem right!

That does seem well out, just had a look on an online money converter and 863= about $1300. Robbing bastards here :(
May have to do with season tariffs, ie northern winter/southern summer.
Can ask the Mrs mate if you want.

If you wouldn't mind mate would be interesting to know, not that I want to go back any time soon was just a bit of a shock to see it at over $2k!

I have just spoken to them and they have no idea why the price's are so different.
They came up with about $2,000 for the same flights.
You could always try one of the "white knuckle" airlines (Garuda,Air China and others), a lot cheaper, but you get what you pay for.

OK mate thanks for asking. I'm white knuckle on any flight so don't fancy Air China or the like. Got to say that new airbus was brilliant, didn't even feel like I was on a plane, no engine noise and the take off/landing was effortless.

Nothing wrong with Garuda these days. Much improved in recent years, think they are launching the first direct flights from London to Indonesia soon. After my landing with Thomas Cook very early doors this morning, give me Garuda anyday!

They did have a very bad name for many years, glad to hear that they are much better and that you had a good flight.

Yeah think they used to have such a poor safety record that they were banned from European airspace for quite a long time, but they have been doing the Amsterdam-Jakarta route for a few years now I believe so must have really booked their ideas up to get a landing slot at Gatwick. SKYTRAX has them down as a 4* airline so at least on par with BA and Virgin.

To the OP, can't comment on Canada but been to OZ twice. Cracking country, though I didn't have to work on my visits so perhaps I have the old rose tinted specs on. If you can deal with being that far away from friends, family and City (the time difference is a bitch) then give it a shot for 12/18 months, but like others have said, be better to go with something lined up and try and get out of holiday mode ASAP.

Don't look back in years to come and think 'what if'....

*Bump*

I had a search before posting as I'm sure nearly everything has been covered before.

Me and the girlfriend got talking about moving to Canada (somewhere near Toronto) last night so I started to look around today. I sent my CV off to Embassy Visas and they phoned me pretty quick to discuss plans. The said finding work should be no worry at all for what I'm wanting.

So straight away I'm thinking it may not be too much of a problem to get things moving. They said Employers they deal with are happy to offer a job and wait 5 months for you to get over there (sounds unbelievable to me but apparently it's true).

My main concern is money though. For anyone who has moved to another Country before, I'd like to ask how much money is it good to head over with? We don't have anything saved at the minute and have only had our house for 2 years so not exactly paid any of it off.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks blues.

Wherever you go, you take yourself and your problems with you, I have known many people that have moved to different Countries and Cities, for a while whilst it's all new things are great, but most find that within a short time the problems they thought they had got away from are still there!

Just don't be under any illusions!

good advice.
i'm a pretty happy bloke, i can be happy anywhere.
my theory is.

there will still be tax.
there will still be crime.
there will still be illness
there will still be rags.

the difference though is its fucking warm.

And no city!
