This new MOT situation

An MoT means your car meets the minimum standard to be on the road, so yes you can defer your MoT if it expires within the prescribed window but you will still be prosecuted if stopped and found to have major defects. I get delaying your MoT if the vehicle isn't being used but otherwise, why compromise on a £35 MoT at the risk of driving a vehicle with dangerous defects?

Mine usually goes hand in hand with a full service. If you’re gonna go 18 months without a service, you’ll probably need to watch your oil, anti-freeze and sundry other levels and filters....

I have it serviced regularly to be honest, but you are right, the longer you leave it the more chance somert will go tits, but that’s life,I could get a 12 month ticket on it tomorrow and somert could go pop next week, that’s the gamble I guess

Fair points

Just be aware that if you take it for an mot during the extention and it fails the mot stops at that point
