As a patriot who is also an atheist and a republican I detest "God Save the Queen" and never sing it.
I owe my loyalty to this country not some head of state who is there through hereditary privilege.
One of the many reasons I can't stand Roy Hodgson was his insistence that the team sang this song.
Somebody ought to tell the twat that although we don't, unfortunately, live in a republic we do live
in a democracy and not North Korea.
In terms of a replacement "I Vow to Thee" would be a great alternative although the "Birdie Song"
would be better than the current anthem. If I've offended anyone tough; we fought for generations
against hereditary privilege and for free speech. That's one of the things that makes me proud to be
English.
I'll give you the free speech bit but the House of Lords still has a fair few hereditary peers and the government front bench reminds me of Monty Python's Upper Class Twit of the Year sketch.
Those from privileged backgrounds still control a disproportionate degree of commerce and industry.
