This should be our national anthem

As a patriot who is also an atheist and a republican I detest "God Save the Queen" and never sing it.
I owe my loyalty to this country not some head of state who is there through hereditary privilege.
One of the many reasons I can't stand Roy Hodgson was his insistence that the team sang this song.
Somebody ought to tell the twat that although we don't, unfortunately, live in a republic we do live
in a democracy and not North Korea.

In terms of a replacement "I Vow to Thee" would be a great alternative although the "Birdie Song"
would be better than the current anthem. If I've offended anyone tough; we fought for generations
against hereditary privilege and for free speech. That's one of the things that makes me proud to be
English.

I am not religious but I think "the dark satanic mills" in Jerusalem refers to the men,women, and often children that made this country great. Sadly not great for themselves.

Actually the "dark satanic mills" he directly refers to were the colleges of Oxford & Cambridge but the inference is clearly
to the sort that, as you said, made this country great albeit not initially for most of the population.

^ Jerusalem is very religious too.

"And was the holy lamb of god"

"Among those dark satanic mills"

My choice would be I Vow to Thee, even though it's a tribute to the fallen (but isn't that better than paying homage to the Queen?).

But agree that God Save the Queen/King is a crap anthem.

Allow me to quote to you the third verse of I Vow To Thee My Country:

And there's another country, I've heard of long ago,
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.

If you couldn't see through the analogy, that's a verse dedicated to praising Heaven and God. It's just as religious as I Vow To Thee.

Just for the record, that is.

Land Of Hope And Glory, Elgars, gets the hairs on the back of the neck and elsewhere standing up. No contest.

It should be...

Enger-land, enger-land, enger-land
Enger-land, enger land, enger-la-and
Enger-land, enger-land, enger-land
Enger-la-and, engerrrrr-land

Repeat.

Yeah - that's the missing piece of Woy's jigsaw - if only we had changed our national anthem, we would be through to the quarter finals now.
Who gives a flying fuck what daft tune our clueless players mime their way through before they make cunts of themselves and let us down, as per usual?

Totally agree

The anthem won't change doesn't matter that it's shite, it goes with the shite team, shite manager.

Genuine question ... how long has GSTQ actually been the Anthem and what happens when Lizzie eventually passes away ??
Do they just stick King in there instead or was this written especially for her reign, meaning a shiny new one will be required once the next monarch takes the throne ?
Since 1745 when sung in support of King George II during the Jacobite uprising.

Yes, they replace "Queen" with King and "send her victorious" with "Send him victorious".
