If he made contact he could have hurt him. And 'if' and a 'could have' don't equal a red card for me, that's why Vinny got sent off for his 'challenge' against Nani last season and none of us were happy.

Definitely no red for that. You can't send people off just for intent, a yellow at worst. Had he made contact though then its clearly a red and I think the ref thought he did make contact.
