"Those were the days my friend" song

My understanding (and I'm happy to accept I could be wrong) is that the opening words I sung (again I could be wrong) fitted with 'Auld Lang Syne' as follows:

Should auld acquaintance be forgot, = In '63 the boys in blue
And never brought to mind? = fell into Division Two,
Should auld acquaintance be forgot, = The Stretford End cried out aloud,
And auld lang syne? = 'it's the end of the Sky Blue',

For auld lang syne, my dear, = Joe Mercer came,
For auld lang syne, = We played the game,
We'll tak a cup of kindness yet, = We went to Rotherham,
For auld lang syne = We won one-nil....
etc.

Thats where you got it wrong mate it definitely starts at the "for auld lang syne my dear" bit.

Cheers. I'm a lousy singer! I still can't get the full nineteen sixty three bit right in my head though. Can someone post the 'right' words with the right bit of the tune, please?

to be honest gary... it was shouted rather than sung... but the opening line is from the chorous... 'In 1963 we went into division 2'.. could also be the proper first line? BUT... get the emphasis right on the words and you'll see which is correct.. Actually I don't think it's auld lang syne at all!!!! it is an hybrid... as most songs evolve as such... due to people singing incorrectly and it just snowballs...

your version just does not fit... I've edited the actual words to Auld Lang Syne in caps above...

OK.. in the song 'ALS'.. the opening word is lower pitched than the next.. 'Should (low) Auld (High)...
In the City song.. the opening word is HIGHER pitched than the next 'IN (High) nineteen' (Low)....

season 1962-1963 we got relegated

we were relegated in may 1963

so why would we sing 62 ?

it's 63 !

LOL... have you read the thread?

I find it staggering that so many get this wrong!

Now my little story about this...

I was one of the guys who helped organise the Kippax Last Stand activities with Mike Donaldson in 1994. City had no plans to mark the end of the Kippax initially but Mike and I had (separately) contacted the Club with a few ideas. They invited us in, and we attended various meetings.

That led to the balloons (one club official said the balloons were too dark 'Chelsea colours' so Mike blew one up and, surprise surprise, it went lighter!), special programme and all sorts of other things. It also led to - and now that I realise I am wrong about the words I feel a bit guilty about this - the singing by Vince Miller (in his white suit) of City chants.

Mike and I were sat in the Boardroom a few days before the final game at City singing various chants to Vince Miller, Bernard Halford, Colin Barlow, Geoff Durbin, Gary Lee and Jimmy Frizzell so that they could agree on what would be sung on the day. We tried to get them to join in - very surreal!

Vince refused to do some because he didn't grasp them. But he did grasp the 'Joe Mercer came' song (clearly the wrong words now!).

On the day of the game he insisted I went on to the pitch with him to help. City had brought in a steel band (not entirely an appropriate sound for chants) and Vince in his white suit did his best to sing the chants. He did well with the 50s 'Bless Em All' chant, but when it came to the 'Joe Mercer came' chant he got it completely out of step. At the time I thought he was awful, now I realise I gave him the wrong bit of the tune!

At least we got Blue Moon right!

Gary, the word "Nineteen" is DEFINITELY sung aloud.

So the only dispute really is whether it was "fell" or went".

I'm prepared to bow down to Levets on this one as he was prowling the Kippax when I was still shitting green (as my Irish mum says)

now that is the 'typical' City we all loved so much........ Decisions made without thinking them through.....

Would have loved to have seen you trying to get them to join in... Gary was OK, got to know him pretty well during the ISA/OSC aftermath...
