Plaything of the gods

Playing the strong team obviously has injury worry implications but players can't be wrapped in cotton wool and I'd argue that fate has it that if you try and protect them they'll get injured, whereas if you play them they'll survive unscathed; the point being that one can be too timid - something which I believe transferred to the way the game was played against Wigan as well as the way the team was set out.kramer said:Plaything of the gods said:Well both played full games midweek and are expected to start in Barcelona so I understand why he wanted to rest them. I was surprised that Kompany didn't come on for Demichelis at the start of the second half though. Hope he's not injured. I admit I chose Lescott by default from the starters and agree with you that there appear to be no natural leaders amongst them.sky tot said:Why Lescott he`s no more more captain material than Yaya .. in a nutshell we lack leaders . only Komps & Zaba are anywhere near capable to wear the armband .So therefore I blame Pellers for not playing one of them .
If I were picking the team I'd have started strong, hit Wigan hard and tried to kill the game early and then rest key players. Thus start Milner and Kompany for the right-sided defence and withdraw Kompany for Demichelis when Wigan were broken and Demichelis mistakes would be less frequent and less costly and pass the captaincy to Milner. I really don't get this start weak and slow, go behind and then chase the game attitude that the team, if not the manager, adopt for the 'weaker' opponents.
I'll be so disappointed if Demichelis isn't gone in the summer for a commanding CB that can step up to the captaincy in Kompany's absence. Also disappointed if makeweights Richards and Rodwell aren't sent out on PL loan to get some match practice and fitness and see whether they can actually cut the mustard; would need to get in a decent deputy RB as well of course.
Problem with this is that if the game doesnt go to plan then the "strong" players might have to play the full game He was obviously confident that is starting 11 could do the job and if not then make the changes from the bench If the plan worked then the "strong" players get the rest He wasn't looking at just yesterday or even just up to Barca he was anticipating that we could have another game to re-arrange due to the semi-final and even planing for the possible, if slight, chance that we could have further games in the ECL to accommodate. I can only imagine the furor on here if he had started strong and key players were injured.
My priority yesterday would have been FA Cup progression and a domestic treble but it is clear now that Pellegrini's and/or the club's priority is a good CL showing. I think that is ambitious in the extreme given the 0-2 home deficit from the first leg. However, a consideration may be that going out of the FA Cup frees up 2 weekends when PL games can be played, or don't need to be rearranged, whereas going out of the CL doesn't free any midweeks - if my understanding is correct - as PL games can't be played during CL days.

BTW, the closed and loaded questions about Pellegrini's future are just plain embarrassing.
