Today's shooting in America thread

(CANADA) The Liberals want to “freeze” the purchase, sale transfer or importation of handguns across Canada as part of a new piece of sweeping gun control legislation that will also force assault weapon owners to sell it back to the government.

This is a typical knee jerk reaction from Trudeau, as reported, the laws already far, far stricter than in the US and we have a different culture here.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters the new measures were needed as gun violence was increasing.

He’s ignoring the fact of where gun violence is increasing, which is in the gang/drug trade. These new proposals will not make a significant dent in those figures because of our proximity with the US border and the easy access to smuggled weapons. The weapons used in these kinds of deaths are not related to the guns the regular hobby shooter owns. The efforts should be in stopping the smuggling, but that is in itself such a huge problem and one that would probably be unenforceable. The change in laws may have helped in countries like Australia, but they don’t have such a prolific US gun culture bordering them.

However, I would agree with the latter point regarding assault weapons. They are not suitable for hunting or precise target shooting, so I don’t see a need to have rapid fire weapons.

Disagree entirely, except wrt assault rifles.

Gun ownership should be very restricted. Perhaps OK for home defense and then limited to the home; and to hunting. Single shot, long load time, sport hunting weapons.

Gun ownership is very restricted.

Unlike the US, a person can't suddenly decide they want a gun and walk into Walmart, present their drivers licence and say, "I want that one and ten boxes of ammunition" and then walk out with an assault rifle, loaded down with ammo to go with it.

Here we have to attend a days training which covers safety, the variances of the different types of guns and calibres, gun handling and recognition. Once the training has been completed, the instructor tests each individually on gun recognition, handling and the safety related to each gun. A written test follows. If successful, then an application is made to the RCMP. The police vet each application and any with criminal records, violence or mental history against their name basically get rejected. If you meet their criteria, then they issue you with a licence.

This allows me to buy and use a non-restricted gun, in my case a shotgun and a bolt action rifle. If I want a restricted licence to buy an assault rifle for instance, then that is a much tougher ball game, as it should be.

I cannot buy a gun or ammunition without my licence and when I do go into the gun shop to buy ammunition, all the details are recorded, date, quantity, type, licence number. Even to buy .22 pellet gun ammunition.

Banning hand guns in this country will do very little to reduce the stats. Drug dealers and gang members, which make up the overwhelming gun related deaths, DO NOT go through the licencing application procedure and walk into a gun shop to buy a hand gun. They purchase on the black market, guns smuggled in across the border from the US.

Very useful post, thank you.

I don't know enough about handguns in Canada to know if this is a good or indifferent/bad thing. I assume there is a slight level of political opportunism here. I also assume Trudeau wants to keep this issue front and center in the US by drawing distinctions in the hope that maybe our own elected representatives heed his example (and perhaps help stem the tide of smuggled HGs, as you point out).

They're not cooperating now there's a federal investigation happening.

Which is such a bad decision from a PR point of view that they must be covering up something even worse than that in the public domain already.

Just my personal opinion, but all 19 officers involved in the school that did not engage, and anyone that arrested and assaulted parents outside, should be fired immediately.

Recruit temporarily from other counties hire and train new officers.

It seems to me that 'the badge' is a power trip in the US. It's also fantasy role play, pussy pulling, bullying and revenge status.

That's all the fear and power of the badge and the gun in one; a cop.
