And we banned handguns as a result. The only objectors were the Olympic pistol shooting team. Of course criminals still use handguns, but usually to shoot each other.

If guns were as readily available here it would be the same. Lots of emotional angry teens who felt slighted would be picking up a gun and going to sort it out. Same with neighbourhood disputes, road rage, pissed off people beaten up or barred from a pub or club. Sure it happens here, sadly with increasing regularity, using knives, machetes etcetera. Luckily it's not as indiscriminate as popping off a firearm. Also using a knife is more up close and personal and comes with a risk it could be turned against you. As for America it's too far down the rabbit hole to come back.

So if your house is broken into, the thief will wait patiently while you gather your gun, then go get the bullets that are locked in a safe (That is the proper way to store ammo), and load the gun? Or would you be dead before you had a chance to do anything?

If you possess a firearm for home-defence you ought to be sleeping with it under the pillow, chambered round, safety on. Having your side-arm in a gun safe, and your ammo in another safe, defeats the purpose.
