I suppose it comes down to opportunity. If you go to a comprehensive you are not likely to be doing equestrian events, archery and rowing in PE lessons. Having said that, snobbery and elitism is probably only a thing at the mediocre 'club level' - the elite end of sport is a ruthless meritocracy.The survey I saw compared the percent of the population from fee paying schools in the general population, vs the percentage of British Olympic medalists from said schools. The percentages were quite different I think.
