Tokyo 2020 Olympics/Paralympics

Totally dominated that. I love the omnium event, even after the changes.

It remains a brilliant event, but the type of riders is very different with the time trial removed. Walls was incredible, just looked the fittest by a mile. Played the strategy in all events perfectly and fully deserved the gold. Pretty comfortable in the end because of his superior fitness. Nice to finally get a gold on the track. Let's hope it kickstarts a few more. Can't see Carlin taking gold ahead of the Dutch riders, but might be inspired to now....

Women have a good shout. Laura Kenny in the omnium too. But we'll see. This games is seeing a continued changing of the guard, which started at the last world champs. But the Brits will come back strong I'm sure.

When you look into how the sports are funded you get some interesting results.

If you treat a Gold as 3 points, Silver as 2 points and Bronze as 1 point then divide the total for each sport you get the following cost for each sport per points earned.
  • Weightlifting and Skateboarding have cost us nothing at all.
  • Swimming has the best return with each point costing £985,876.
  • Athletics at £11,503,766, Rowing at £8,218,469, Judo at £6,564,334, Shooting at £6,008,790 and Canoeing at £5,448,231 are the worse.
  • The rest range from a high of £2,681,738 (Gymnastics) to a low of £1,007,053 (Triathlon).
UK Sport needs to take a long hard look at how they fund our Olympic sports and a redistribution is long overdue.

P.S. - These figures will change especially if our Athletes pull their collective fingers out.
Useful post, cheers.

I do wonder swimming is distorted by the sheer number of events/medals available, which maybe makes it slightly easier for that sport to boost its medal haul(?)
