Tony Blair

If only John Smith had lived........

It took about 2 days after his first election to deflate the celebrations when he appointed David Mellor as head of the Government's Football Task Force.

It was all down hill after that. New Labour = Soft Tories. A Labour that was electable on the Tories terms.
Forever tainted over the lies of Weapons of mass destruction (why is that term never heard of anymore??)

Tony Blair was a fake, we all know that. He feathered the nests of many wealthy people, companies and institutions if something was in it for him. This does not put any perspective on the shameful ruinous activities of that woman Thatcher. The fact that Blair had massive failings does not excuse that cow's policies and the mess she made of cities, industries, communities. It is regrettable that we havent had a new govt and leader who was not like all the others. But to say because Blair turned into a **** somehow makes Thatcher less culpable or should be less condemned because of that, which I think is what the OP is driving at, is wholly wrong. That woman started this mess, unfortunately nobody has been straight enough to fix it.

After years of Thatcher ruining the country, destroying the unions, closing pits and all her other disgraceful antics, at long last along came the Labour party with Tony Blair at the helm.
Lets look back at how he brought prosperity to Britain and re engaged with the unions. Lets start with the steel industry. He helped an Indian billionaire buy a steel works in Romania after the business man donated £125k to the labour party. Oh sorry bad example.
The uk car industry. Labour gave 16 million pounds to the Phoenix Consortium to help relaunch the British car industry. It was a captialist conspiracy that meant they went bust and certainly not a waste of taxpayers money.
Staying with the car industry, he did provide multi million pounds in sweetners so that the Japanese car giants Nissan could provide jobs to a few hundred Mackems. OK they were forced to have just one single union representing them but it did mean the factorywas productive and that the subsequent profits could go straight back to Japan.
He of course did a lot for the UK arms industry. Why invite the Saudis over to watch a mock demonstration when they can see the real thing in the own back yard.
Human Rights. Who can forget that it was the Labour Party that brought this to the forefront and put it into English Law. Fortunately Tonys wife was a leading Human Rights Lawyer so could provide expert help on this matter.

I could go on but I am sure many other posters would like to contribute and tell us of their fond meories of the man and all his good work and how he undid all the terrible evils of Thatchers regime.

Why are people even responding to this massive fail of a thread?

The OP has blundered horrendously in the opening line by omitting seven years of Major with all the sleaze that entailed not to mention Black Wednesday.

The 7 years is totally unrelated to Thatcher and Blair. Blair was the first Labour leader who had the chance to redress the wrongs inflicted (allegedly) by the Thatcher government. We have had posters in another topic saying how she destryed the unions. Blair/Labour helped Nissan operate a factory in the north east. One of the main conditions was that the workers were only allowed 1 trade union to represent them. Perhaps that was to stop the wildcat strikes commonly seen in the car industry in the 70's and 80'swhere there were 4 or 5 unions in one factory and when one lot came out no one crossed the picket line and so no work was done. Whilst it might be a sensible policy from a Conservative view point it is not something Labour should be supporting surely ?
The sleaze of John Majors government was bad but Blair and his cronies beat him hands down. Labour campaigned saying they would remove tobacco advertising from sport. They then granted Formula one an exemption when they came to power in May 1997. Unfortunately the million pounds they received from Bernie Ecclestone in January of the same year showed him and his partiy for what they really were, up for sale.

^^^ This, this and thrice this ^^^

The sad thing is, I remember staying up late on election night in May '97 and feeling incredibly hopeful and optimistic.

Thanks Tony, god only knows how you sleep at night.

New Labour were the biggest bunch of vile scum i've seen in my lifetime.

God help us if enough clueless lefties and benefit dependant deadbeats vote them lot in again.

Only a full 5 year tory government without the liberals can save this country, starting by making some much bigger cuts in benefits to scroungers.

Capping all household benefits to 20% below the national minimum wage would be a good start so the jobless are always worse off than a worker. Stopping child benefit after 2 kids should be next.
Yet voted in again & again!

Oh dear.

Just like Thatcher
