MCFC debut v West Ham United (a) 17.3.1973

Tony Whelan had been at Old Trafford nearly six seasons as both apprentice and full-time pro but only made 3 appearances during a tour of the USA. He jumped at the chance of joining City thanks to Malcolm Allison, He initially came on a one-month trial. He scored two goals against Stoke on his reserve debut and further goals against Wolves and Aston Villa. His first League game was at Upton Park where WHUFC beat City 2-1, but Tony's performance was one of the brighter parts of the City display (he almost scored twice). He was in the side for the injured Rodney Marsh and Allison made favourable comparisons between the two players. But Allison left City 13 days after Tony's West Ham appearance and new manager Johnny Hart dropped him. He was mainly a reserve player in 1973-74, coming on three times as a sub in League games. He moved to Rochdale in the 1974 close season.

Tony was a fanatical Blue. He played for United's youth teams in the morning and then we used to stand on the Kippax together, him wearing his Parka covered in badges and a Union Jack.

I met him through schools football when I played centre half for Stretford Grammar School and he played centre forward for St. Pauls in Urmston.

He was a great guy and a great friend. I remember a great night out with him when we went to watch The Who at the Palace in Manchester followed by more than a few in a number of pubs in town.

He has had a very succesful career at United coaching the kids following a stint in the USA.

IIRC Tony was at the farewell final game at Maine Road vs Southampton 2003. He was one of many ex players invited by the club who were paraded around the perimeter of the pitch.
