Incredible but as they say no accounting for taste I had him at number 12 and thought he would get into the top 30 a pioneer in may respects but hey what do I know."Unique" was a big driver to my choices; James Brown was certainly that on a wide variety of levels. "Entertaining" also was, and it's hard to think of many more entertaining than he, at least to me. His genre is the only reason I didn't rate him higher in that I like soul/funk but not as much as other genres. But let's face it -- if you've been a musical meme for six decades you deserve a place on the list higher than 194.
Still listen to him today as I did decades ago so for me that is what makes for a great singer.
I have this sense Fog that a number of voters didn't look at entertaining with the voice as a criteria to make a decision on.
Who would you rather entertain you with their presence in song , David Lee Roth or John Lennon?
For me it would be DLR hands down and that does not disparage the song writing and influence of one the greats if not the greatest in the pop / rock era in JWL in any way shape or form.
