Top 100 Favourite Male Vocalists Final plus # 1

"Unique" was a big driver to my choices; James Brown was certainly that on a wide variety of levels. "Entertaining" also was, and it's hard to think of many more entertaining than he, at least to me. His genre is the only reason I didn't rate him higher in that I like soul/funk but not as much as other genres. But let's face it -- if you've been a musical meme for six decades you deserve a place on the list higher than 194.
Incredible but as they say no accounting for taste I had him at number 12 and thought he would get into the top 30 a pioneer in may respects but hey what do I know.

Still listen to him today as I did decades ago so for me that is what makes for a great singer.

I have this sense Fog that a number of voters didn't look at entertaining with the voice as a criteria to make a decision on.

Who would you rather entertain you with their presence in song , David Lee Roth or John Lennon?

For me it would be DLR hands down and that does not disparage the song writing and influence of one the greats if not the greatest in the pop / rock era in JWL in any way shape or form.

Edit - for me best doesn't equate with favourite but I can understand for others if you asked them to vote in both categories their would be a lot of overlapping but in my case their would be little if any as far as top ten is concerned.

Me too! I voted for guys like Lydon and Butler because their voices added a ton of edge to their music but are they “good” at singing? I don’t know, probably not. I was the only person to vote for Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys because his voice is not only really attractive but the snark/sarcasm/irony he injects outdoes even Morrissey.

As noted the “quality” of the voice doesn’t matter much to me as an element of song and there are few individual male singers (almost none) who’d I listen to only for their vocal chops. I do enjoy great harmonies immensely — The Beach Boys, The Roches (not men, I know), even Blink-182.

Offhand the only artist I can think of where the music doesn’t matter and only the voice does hasn’t been in the countdown yet. But he’s coming, and I’d bet he’s number 1.

Well, I’d rather listen to Lennon sing Imagine and DLR sing Jamie’s Crying!

As with the other polls, there is a part of me that says the number of voters should be the criteria for the order and the number of votes the tie-breaker. I think we’d have a bit more consensus then. Isn’t 4 people placing an artist 9th out of a gazillion artists higher acclaim than only one person and no one else voting one guy his/her favourite?

It doesn’t matter as it’s our esteemed pollster’s choice, and it probably isn’t going to matter at all for the top few who’d win either way, but something to consider.

I agree with this sentiment and alas this forum is way too small a sample size to get the mood of many who have favourites but don't vote for a range of reasons.

As a thread its engages and that is a good thing IMO.

Lydon I agree with adds edge and suits the style and message in spades and that's part of the reason I have him 17th.

Tennant is an interesting one , I rate him higher in listening to for his projection and sarcasm than I do the music and as you say tunes and harmonies do matter immensely.

he snuck into my top 100.

So some are trying to de-rail the poll eh!

A Sinatra mafia thread eh!

Fuck me, Frank gets in the top 4 of best male singer and it's like City bingo!

Half of the other top singers are dead so it's obvious who the so called red top singers are and who make up the hateful nine.

I'll take it to CAS if I have to, to prove the result is legit.

Frank's here to stay, so just go swivel.

I totally agree with you.
My Primary reason for running these polls is because it’s enables a framework for great discussions about Music.
Secondly I am nosey and I enjoy finding out the musical tastes of others.
Finally I find I tend to ensure I pay attention and respect those that post here on other threads.

You and Rob and Bluehammer ( and others who I might have forgotten ) do a great job and while I post a bit on politics and City my first love outside my family and friends is Music so like you I am happy to contribute and learn from others.

Long may you continue if time and desire permits to run these threads , they seem to be far more civil which in part is no doubt a credit to you all.

I look forward to the final 4 albeit I think I know them perhaps not in order however and the next vote of this kind.

Awe thank you so much.
The time and desire is there but I dont want to hog the chair if Rob or BH want to take over next.
The next poll will be interesting no doubt.
If these polls descend into keyboard warriors spewing their bile I would abandon it without warning. Not that I think that will happen.

That would be great Champion top Four or completely overlooked q:(
there are so many great singers/songwriters musicians and my favourites could be at least 50 the older you are the bigger the list
I voted for Marvin.
I wasn't too successful with the rest of them.
Yoy don't realise how many great and diverse singers there are.
