Although it's grown on me now, The Game was a slight disappointment for me, but Hot Space and Kind of Magic killed them off from me listening to them, although they sort of got back to form with The Works and The Miracle, the damage had been done by then...Spent years hearing my older sister saying, "turn that shit off" when I played Queen....Fast forward to Live Aid and suddenly she's their number one fan, she even went to the Freddie's memorial gig. At the height of all this, I thought I'd catch her out...Stuck Queen 2 on full volume...She came in, "Whats this shit you've got on?"
At the time, anyone who said they were into Queen was really saying they have Queens greatest hits...Always pissed me off that.
I felt similar disappointment with The Game at the time. But nowadays I really love a lot of it. Dragon Attack and Need Your Lovin are two underrated deep cuts.
Hot Space.... an odd one for me. On it's release I loved it. Partly down to it being a really happy time in my life, and I liked that they still tried new things. It went down badly with the majority of the fans, especially earlier rock ones. They knew it too, especially Taylor and May, lol. I still like a few tracks from it. Staying Power is excellent .... and as said above, their live show still delivered on that tour. (Fantastic hot sunny day at Elland Road with support from Heart, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and The Teardrop Explodes)
It was their Magic era I really hated. Felt very bland and by numbers. Innuendo was a return to form, especially the title track. But that was at the very end. As for the Lambert line up ... nah, not for me.
Did see Roger Taylor solo in October 2021 at The Academy and he was excellent .... did Tenement Funster and a few of his compositions, yes even feckin Ga Ga, lol (Sadly nothing from his first solo album, Fun In Space, which I absolutely love)
Queen ll .... my favourite of theirs (just ahead of Sheer Heart Attack) The run of the Fairy Feller's Masterstroke/Nevermore/March Of The Black Queen/Funny How Love Is cannot be bettered for me.
On a bit of a tangent, I knew a guy who was DJ at one of the Punk clubs back in the day. For a good few weeks, he kept playing a track that filled the dance floor with more pogoing punks each time he played it .... for weeks this went on. He eventually revealed it was Sheer Heart Attack the song ... 'ever feel cheated' ;-) :-)
