Top 105 Guitarists - The Winner page 33

That’s the thing with musicians like Hendrix. What he did was a quantum leap forward compared to everything that had come before. But there are probably loads of guitarists who were eventually better than him in terms of technique and the music they produced.

My view is that he paved the way and inspired many, but he’s not the greatest.

Just for fun .....

Purple Haze
Voodoo Chile
Hey Joe
The Wind Cries Mary
Crosstown Traffic
Castles Made of Sand
All Along The Watchtower (Cover alert, although the best version)

.... I named those off the top of my head without Googling.

Hendrix was 19 when he wrote Foxy Lady. I could play it when I was 15 .... says a lot really.

I felt similar disappointment with The Game at the time. But nowadays I really love a lot of it. Dragon Attack and Need Your Lovin are two underrated deep cuts.

Hot Space.... an odd one for me. On it's release I loved it. Partly down to it being a really happy time in my life, and Igot a mention liked that they still tried new things. It went down badly with the majority of the fans, especially earlier rock ones. They knew it too, especially Taylor and May, lol. I still like a few tracks from it. Staying Power is excellent .... and as said above, their live show still delivered on that tour. (Fantastic hot sunny day at Elland Road with support from Heart, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and The Teardrop Explodes)
It was their Magic era I really hated. Felt very bland and by numbers. Innuendo was a return to form, especially the title track. But that was at the very end. As for the Lambert line up ... nah, not for me.
Did see Roger Taylor solo in October 2021 at The Academy and he was excellent .... did Tenement Funster and a few of his compositions, yes even feckin Ga Ga, lol (Sadly nothing from his first solo album, Fun In Space, which I absolutely love)

Queen ll .... my favourite of theirs (just ahead of Sheer Heart Attack) The run of the Fairy Feller's Masterstroke/Nevermore/March Of The Black Queen/Funny How Love Is cannot be bettered for me.

On a bit of a tangent, I knew a guy who was DJ at one of the Punk clubs back in the day. For a good few weeks, he kept playing a track that filled the dance floor with more pogoing punks each time he played it .... for weeks this went on. He eventually revealed it was Sheer Heart Attack the song ... 'ever feel cheated' ;-) :-)
On another tangent, my mates brother, Draken Kusmanov, did the lighting for Queen and even got a mention on one of the live albums, either Live Killers or Live Magic, I forget which. A weird coincidence is the fact I found out recently I live in the house he grew up in.
Agree totally about side black from Queen II..It really was a Fairy Fellers masterstroke, if you catch my drift lol...

Queen's lighting around 77/80 was unique with those amazing independent banks of lights moving around. Kudos to your mate's brother and all involved in that.

There have been lots of books written about the band, many claiming to be 'insiders'. But one I can highly recommend is 'Queen Unseen' by Peter ('Ratty) Hince who was Fred and Deacon's roadie from their earliest days (meeting them when working for Mott) A great read.

PS, apologies to Protein Junkie for slightly hijacking the thread. Would happily discuss in a seperate Queen thread, but it just causes a pile on of haters, lol ...
