Transfer deadline day

Paul Merson rekons Arsenal along with a few others have had a better transfer window than us. He has graded each team and given Arsenal a B and City a B-.
Just about stopped laughing

I also noticed this, to think he is a paid pundit is a joke. We have added genuine class in numerous positions while keeping all our best players. He probably was smashed at the time though the degenerate.

Listening to the brain dead fuck yesterday, it baffles me why Sky have this clueless oaf as a pundit. It was embarrassing watching him giving his assessment of our transfer window performance as opposed to Danny Higginbottom who sounded really clued up and intelligent of football matters.

Higginbottom went on to say that the difference between City and their main rivals in this window is that we identified what our issues were right at the end of last season and set out early to fix them and bought players to suit a new 4231 formation. He also said how surprised he was to see our main rivals either not strengthen a great deal like Arsenal, or to leave it all until the final few days before the deadline like the Chavs or ManUre.

As a pundit, Higginbottom is a breath of fresh air and can see a big future ahead for him. His obvious intellect belies the gormless look on his boat........

He graded the rags equal to us!!! We have signed 2 of the most exciting young players around. They have signed Anthony what's-his-chops for €80m, cocked up with de gea and brought in a slow right back and an old German. Incredible. I think this is one of our best and their worst windows!!

Transfer deadline day proved yet again that it is the day on which we see clearly which clubs are well run and which are badly run. City take the prize in the well run category because we had no need for any other activity than sitting with feet up to watch the chaos. Our transfer window began at about this time last year and picked up pace as last season turned to disappointment. By the end of the season those running the club knew what changs were going to be made to our style and which players would make it possible. We knew how much we were prepared to pay for them and when the window opened Txiki et al got cracking and came up with the goods, except, presumably, Pogba who may well come next year. We weren't interested in B lists or second choices to distract us from the main aim and we spent a lot but got a lot of top quality players.

This is in stark contrast with our rivals. Mourinho has apparently been shocked by the poor form of some of his key personnel, but the acrimonious window they have been through speaks rather of "issues" between manager and owner and being caught napping as to the identification of targets and the time available to get them. They pride themselves now on beating a dopey United to a player not good enough to get in Barcelona's team. United began well and were held to have "won the transfer window" before it opened! Then it appears to have fallen apart as they had money burning a hole in their pockets and no idea on whom to spend! Reports haven't yet told us if Martial is still speaking to van Gaal or whether he's thrown his lot in with most of the other players. They're still trying to explain how they hoped to sell de Gea by filling in the transfer forms for Donald Duck! Which brings me to Arsenal. Wenger announced that there would be no "marquee" signings early and this dismayed gooners. It would have dismayed them more if he'd told them he wasn't buying non-marquees either. The window always seems to take Wenger by surprise. In active years he sniffs around looking at who's available, and in the last two years Ozil and Sanchez have had to seek other clubs at a time when Arsenal have a free run. This is approaching the window as though it is the second hand bookstore at a jumble sale. At others he dithers and "targets" go elsewhere because Arsene won't pay the price. This time he had no idea who he wanted and seemed to feel he had been a naughty boy and pinched the pennies from Stan's piggy bank in the last two windows. For Arsene the window begins in summer - for City PLANNING began in January.

Agree with most of it. As for Arsenal, it's obvious how they seem to work. Wenger believes he has build a team ready to win the PL and they are very strong I must admit. And he always waits to see an opportunity to try and get a player available due to circumstances, not really going for a specific target. Unless there are no targets and no opportunities arose. Btw, Wenger always seems to acknowledge French talent before anyone else. I wonder how he (Wenger) didn't spotted Martial, the player Rooney knew nothing about, when he's labelled such a fantastic talent ever since the rags have an interest in him that resulted in a deadline day signing. Still think out of the former so-called "top 4" they (United) have done the best business, even with the deadline day comedy included that only proved to me how far behind they have fallen.

The Sun analysis gives Chelsea and United 4 out of 10 - worst in the PL (alongside Norwich and Sunderland) and accuses Chelsea of making the classic mistake of not strengthening when on top and United of being in chaos. Arsenal fare just a bit better at 5 but says missing out on a striker is an issue.

City get top marks - 9 out of 10 with correct praise all round. Second best is Stoke at 8 whom they argue could contest for Europe with their window.

Could not be more different from Merson but I know which verdict I support.

"Merse" has fallen for all the golden rules of Wengeresque prudence. This leads to some quite hilarious conclusions along the lines that the club (Arsenal) had a fine window by bringing in a goalkeeper and no-one else, but that they actually would have to spend money on players to have any chance of winning the title. His conclusion is: totally inactive window, good value for nothing spent, absolutely no improvement to the outfield team, no improvement in chances of title challenge, brilliant window!

With City he accepts Delph was good business- and we'd all agree that a regular England player for £8m is good business - but we then get the old chestnuts about fees, with Sterling and de Bruyne being "pathetically overpriced". This misses the point by as much as a Merson shotused to miss the goal. A player's value can only be judged by looking at his contribution to his team. This means that there is an element of risk in any transfer, but the logic of Merson's argument is that buying de Bruyne or Sterling could be worse "business" than Arsenal NOT buying Benzema because all the goals Benzema does NOT score for Arsenal will not cost the club a penny each whereas a miss from either of our two can be made to look very costly!! His criticism of the Martial deal at the swamp is similarly bizarre. Of all the criticisms he could have levelled at LvG and Windward, he criticises them for buying Martial when they are short of forwards! He never tells us whether this lad is pathetically overpriced or not.
