I would recommend staying outside the city. There’s a great place about 35 miles east of Liverpool with better bars, hotels and restaurants with excellent road and rail links. Bit like staying in Düsseldorf for Monchengladbach.

Make it a proper away. Book an early flight to say Amsterdam, go on the lash for a few hours then get an afternoon flight to Liverpool.

Just got back from Amsterdam, the lash is not as strong as it once was.

San Sebastián, that is where to go before slumming it in the pool. ;-)

9 pages in and I can't believe no one has mentioned the obvious answer / solution....

The day before we all get on the train to Chester and then change for Wrexham! Yes lets spend a day in another country, with inhospitable locals who will speak another language.
Don't go to the North Wales coast. It is full of Merseyside refugees fleeing their crime torn / unemployment zone. Stay inland for that true feel of being in another country / culture.

Simply make your way back to Chester station on the day of the game and on to Slime Street.

Do remember though Wrexham is for only the most intrepid travellers. It was twinned with Grozny before Grozny was rebuilt. Much like its twin there is a danger of kidnap beheading and rape. Syphilis and Welsh monkey fever are endemic and it pisses down almost everyday and usually all day.
