I couldn't make out what was happening during the match, but looking at that video I am appalled.
How many stewards/policemen does it take to haul out an elderly man?
What had he done to deserve this?
If, as has been stated, his only 'crime' was to stand up along with hundreds of other people, then why were they not taken out too?
To see an elderly man hauled out in such an undignified fashion and then to see him lying on the floor, apparently in a state of distress in a premier English football stadium on a Saturday afternoon in the 21st century, while police officers and Showsec stewards stand around trying to look menacing by chewing gum is nothing short of disgraceful.
I was a steward years ago in the Main Stand at Maine Road and, by and large, it was a good number. We didn't get paid, save for a cup of tea and a programme with the voucher removed, but it was a job that needed doing and it was done on a voluntary basis and with goodwill.
I bet there weren't 100 stewards back then and if there were any problems the police would generally er, wade in and crack a few swedes - whereas now there seems to be hundreds of stewards in every colour of jacket imaginable and from what looks like every firm in the North West. I would guess that most aren't City fans and it's easy money most of the time. I know it's not an easy task sometimes, but I do get the impression that most are there to pick up easy money rather than out of the goodness of their hearts.
If this incident is proved to be down to Showsec's inability to deal with whatever heinous crime this man has been accused of, then it's time to wave goodbye. Let them do the concerts at the Apollo or wherever their bread and butter is and leave the stewarding of football grounds and security to those who actually could care less about the fans.
