I randomly met a former league club chairman, who will remain anonymous, last autumn, who also sat on the football league fixtures panel. He said the amount of tampering - agreed and needed tampering that is, not dodgy - to the fixture list is huge and applies in the Premier League as well.

There are the obvious safety and policing needs for multiple clubs from the same city (the main driver of alterations to the random fixture list), individual club requests that are heeded if they are of no clear advantage (e.g. non-footballing events), pressures such as other cup competitions, and even TV companies getting a say. it's quasi-random, at best, but not cherry picked for tough runs etc.

What's blatant and how does it matter? Are you suggesting that because we are away for the first game of the season our title challenge is over?

I personally like the last game to be at home as it often turns out tobe the most important game of the season for us.
