Turkish Barbers

It would be easy to determine if a shop is a front for money laundering, just look them up on companies house. If they're dealing drugs and laundering money through the books then it would be obvious in their accounts. This is why I don't think it's actually a big problem because I think it's far too obvious. Given tons of these shops are opening up, they're either very stupid or HMRC are utterly blind.

I looked up the barbers that I go to and the guy who owns it has put through maybe £25-30k last year. Most staff in a barbers are self-employed so a lot of income sits off the shop anyway. Basically the shop owner is making just above minimum wage, he's hardly Pablo Escobar really!

At the very worse the self-employed lads who work in there might not be declaring their earnings properly and therefore paying less tax. A good example is if you tip, my haircut is £8 so I always give £10. The £2 gets thrown in the till and maybe they share it all? No idea. This happens though everywhere and not just in a Turkish barbers. Does your local chippy do it any differently?
Oh mate, you are quite naive aren’t you?

The ones to look for are the ones that don’t file accounts and then close when they have to (like a lot of bars) and open in a new trading name.

He or she is more bothered about saving 7 quid on a haircut.

They could be doing anything in there but as long as he gets his high fade:-)

My local ‘Turkish’ barber is always full and he’s not cheap. I guess he cuts hair for a living.

thing that gets me is if they are fronts for money laundering and don't actually provide haircuts how come the traditional barbers in these areas are complaining about their presence they are taking all the trade surely both things cannot be true

Hahahahaha, maybe they shadow cut or maybe just maybe they possess the ability to have someone cut hair, avoid tax, money launder and sell a bit of this and a bit off that.

Fuckin hell.

You mean the ones that are totally refurbished as well time after time as well, ye that’s totally legit as well!

Naive as fook if you think most arent a front.
Yes they cut hair but lads in them dont own the shop, lad in mine that i go to gets free rent of the chair to work there! I mean … come on.
They are all kurds in there too, not turkish.
But everyones happy, landlord gets rent, council get business rates, HMRC get some sort of tax income.

Most? How could you possibly know, the one next door to my shop is no 'front'.

Literally “most”!!!
I also go to one, does a great job, i like the extra touches that the ‘english’ barbers dont generally do, ear and nose trim, do neck with a razor, splash of smelly. But im also not daft

I live in a small town, 12,000 residents. It had 3 barbers, enough to sustain, but 3 “turkish” barbers have now opened up. One recently. Now im no alan sugar but if i was looking to open a barber, im not sure id open one with 5 already within 200yards of each other

I don't think 'everyone' is happy. What about the traditional barber who's struggling to make a living by being a barber and can't compete with 'barbers' who have a shop as a front ?

We have 4 barbers in a town of 7000, one of which is Turkish, all 4 are constantly busy,I went in last Wednesday at 3.00 had to wait 45 minutes, we have about 8 hairdressers, not to mention beauty salons, so yes we could probably sustain another barbers.
I have no reason to beleive any of the barbers or hairdressers, in town are fronts.I'm sure some are around the country but I' hven't the faintest idea how many so won't say most.

Sorry i didnt really explain well. My mistake. The police dont have the resources to investigate them, so given that the council, landlords, HMRC, get an income then they will be happy

The 6 i mentioned, 3 are “turkish”. I put it in inverted commas because they aint turkish! One got busted for having illegal workers. One is quiet, funnily enough its the one i go in but a new (another new one, they have a huge turnover of staff) lad started working there and hes great and ill go til he is there. He said despite the free chair rent he cant earn a living.
The other one is new, spent a fortune on the shop, been open a month, already advertising for new staff, barely see anyone in there.
If you dont think that all stinks then im not sure what to say

To edit… none if the 3 turkish ones have owner/barbers. The lad who cuts mine we chat, hes a top lad, brummie. I asked who owns it, he laughed and said “i dont wanna know”.

You may well be right but it's yet another example of the police 'not having the the resources' , bit like the current shoplifting epedemic isn't it? Yet they have the resources to send large teams to a pub that has some dolls on display or to arrest a perfectly average couple for criticising a school on a whatsapp group. There's no shortage of resources when huge numbers of police vehicles descend on a road traffic accident or close a whole motorway when one lane would probably suffice. I think it's often a question of using the recources effectively. We need a similar approach to New York's zero 'tolerance' in the 90's. Where I live in Oldham there are cars parked dangerously day in, day out. I can think of one shop where there is a parked car completely blocking the pavement on a regular basis forcing people in wheelchairs or with prams to walk along a busy main road on the wrong side of steel barriers. The shop is right next to a set of traffic lights and on more than one occasion I've seen police cars waiting at the lights less than two feet from the illegally parked car and not one of them has been arsed to tell the owner to move it. Sorry to ramble but I'm fed up reading daily about our publicly funded organisations complaing about a lack of resources. I do have some sympathy for the police when it comes to repeat offenders but of course we can't put all the people who should be off the streets because of a 'lack of resources' can we? There are common sense solutions to most things but we don't do common sense in this country any more do we?

I also live in Oldham, and know exactly what you mean about cars parked fully on pavements. Especially on Union Street. Not just one or two either, but several at a time for hours.
I've complained but all I had back was *we will continue to monitor as resources allow..."

I totally agree with all youve said

Makes a nice change - thank you
Do i normally disagree with you?

Regardless. My whole point is that people that think ‘most’ ‘turkish’ barbers arent fronts, like the million takeaways and the sweet/desert shops that pop, are just naive

I know a retired detective , he said when he finished in the force ten years ago, 80% of indian restaurants were money launderings
