These commentators are working most days these days and don’t have the same time to do research and hardly any of it is going to be original, barring some niche stats.
When it was one game a week, without the internet, you felt like the commentators added to the games as they had stuff you didn’t know up their sleeves.
Just look at McCoist. When he wasn’t doing much, he was described as a breath of fresh air. Now, I’ll tell you something, he’s like all the others, he really is.

I always preferred Barry Davies rather than Motty, even the “just look at his face” bit. Of today’s commentators I like Seb Hutchinson, he seems to be neutral, concentrates on the football and so far, I haven’t heard him say anything negative about City, so he’ll do for me.I go back a long way, nearly 70 now, so I enjoyed the wonderful commentary by the likes of Kenneth Wolstenhome and Motty, for example. These modern ‘commentators’ don’t actually commentate, they tend to chat with their colleague about stuff about football. I don’t mind this with cricket, because there is more space between the action, but if you were to ask me who is on the pitch for England this evening I think I could name 7 or 8 but the others never get mentioned. Motty and Ken just used to tell us who was on the ball, and maybe made a comment like ‘great pass’ or ‘what a goal’. These numpties only seem to want to witter meaningless stuff.
