As I always watch matches on TV with the sound down, I assumed until recently when reading about him in this forum that ‘Matterface’ must be a nickname and that people called him this as some kind of insult.

It never occurred to me that it could be a genuine surname.

Agree with all of that. Especially with the Irish rag.

Back to the topic. It's not just the commentators. I honestly feel the way the game is represented by Sly and the others has led to its detriment. All fans of the sport say the same thing about the broadcasting companies: 'Might as well be rag TV.' And they are right. It is more than just bias, it is basically telling the other clubs (minus the dippers, naturally) that they are not important: that they do not warrant anymore of the attention than they already get.

The rags and the dippers have always been 'Hollywood' clubs, the fanfares, marching bands, cheerleaders etc. Even when I was a kid it was overkill. Kids in the playground who hated football knew the names of the 'Combover King,' George Best and many others. And that can only happen due to immense media coverage, so it's obvious it was happening back in the 60's.

There hasn't been a level playing field either on or off the pitch for the better part of 30 years, and with the money being made as a result of this blatant favouritism it isn't going to change.

They tend to do a video link up with him, before, half time, and after the game. The commentator tends to be one of the lesser known ones, that does world wide coverage.
I avoid TNT /Sky coverage for our matches. My blood pressure is much the better for it

Over emphasising a players name when they have a shot

Most commentators are now trying to find their Aguero moment.

I think that's why I was disappointed Amazon Prime lost games, turning off the commentary is a great feature.

Nice to see Raymond Glendenning getting a mention.......ah, my past heroes....... he did everything, boxing, horse racing, football - but not cricket or golf.

Football on tele doesn’t need commentators. They’re actually a distraction. If I watch a game on tele all I’m interested in is my eyes seeing the football, my ears listening to the atmosphere and my mind making its own opinions about it all.

Amazon’s option to turn commentary off makes it so much better to watch.


For the blind, radio commentary is infinitely more deceptive.
