Manchester. Always will be.
Live in apartments with 100+ residents. So i thought i'd be alright not getting a TV license.

Yesterday got a letter saying people would be calling round for an interview in respect of the lack of said license. Anyone ever had one of these and did they show??

Do they need a warrant to enter your home ? I'd just tell them to fuck off if they do. That detector van stuff is just a load of bollocks. All they do is check addresses that have no licence and accuse you of having a tv.

Mate used to work for them. They show, and don't fuck about. You usually get one warning and if they catch you again, you get fined. They don't have any legal right to enter, but if they suspect a TV (or other receiving equipment) is being used, they get a search warrant.

What if you have a tv but used for dvd use only??

When me and Gav lived on Oak Ave they sent one of them reminders every week.

They never showed up. However we did have to pay the council tax 3 years later which is another matter.

Just don't let them in. they have no entry powers unless they are accompanied by a police officer, and to be honest they couldn't give a sh1t. I got caught when I was at uni in Middlesbrough. It was 2 weeks after we moved in to our house and my flatmate from Jordan had no idea what a TV licence was let him in because he thought it was someones mate. Bought a tv licence there and then, but about 3 months later got a summons from the magistrates, went along with one of the professors from the law department. The magistrate took one look at his notes and said "This is a waste of my time and you should not be bringing cases such as this before me" the CPS clerk looked so embarrased it was brilliant.

Moral of the story, they are toothless dogs who rely on their bark too much.

Grey area, but the burden of proof would be on you. Problem is, a TV is by definition a 'television receiver', so I don't think that would be a valid excuse.

You can either
a) tell em to clear off. They have no right of entry. But they will be back.
or
b) let them in and tell them you use your tv for DVDs and gaming only and you watch BBCi player after the progs are broadcast. You do NOT need a licence for either of these
or
c) get a licence. Every flat needs one to watch tv live.

Still counts. Though why, I have no idea? I mean, if you could prove you have no ariel connection, just dvd player, then why?
Know this simply cos nephew student got fined for it.

djspam - did you get one saying they were gonna come round though or just reminder that you need one coz we have had a few of them.

Also what do you reckon the chance they will be round in the next 4 months??

My brother had one come round but as they hadnt moved in they didnt have a tv, couldnt do owt. Just get rid of your tv for a bit or buy a tv licence!

I have lived in a few barrack blocks over the years, with up to 100 people living in the same block. Even then, you need one license for each TV. Out-fcuking-rageous!!!

You are wrong.
You do not need a licence if you watch dvds or programmes on iplayer that are not currently live.
The jobsworth you deal with may tell you you do but it is quite clear, as confirmed by the BBC, you only need a licence to watch live broadcasts.

We have a tv in each bedroom but the aerials sockets dont work so are used for dvds only. the tv in the living room works fine though. so if we get rid of the tv in the living room and they see the others we could prove to them that they dont work.

when would they come. no one is ever in during working hours anyway

The chance of them visiting is 0.01%. Even if they did leave it with Nitty, he can talk his way out of anything.

They threatened to visit but never did, are you moving out then? Back to Diane's?

Now, with me being a pillar of the local community I pay my license by DD.

Don't let them in, don't talk to them and do not reply to any letters. If they continue to visit and send threatening letters send them the standard letter allegeing harrassment that is available on-line. That stops them.

Don't let them see or hear a TV from outside your home. Don't worry about detector van evidence. It has never been used in court for legal reasons. Don't worry about search warrants. They are hardly ever granted and in the incredibly rare event of them getting a warrant you'll be OK if your TV is off at the time of the search.

Apologies. Seems nephew was lied to.
