TV Series

Just watching The Ted Bundy Tapes on Netflix, i wasn't born when this was all going on so only know of him after the fact. It shows what a shit show the whole system was back then, they make so many mistakes that, if it happened now, someone would have their life destroyed by the media. I'm not sure if you can really spoil documentary about a real event but he escaped twice from two different state prisons, he was allowed special treatment even though he was being put on trial for several murders, he was allowed by the Judge in Florida to not only represent himself, but to LEAD the defence attorneys on his own trial and cross examine witnesses. I don't know what happened subsequently, but this judge needed to have been stripped of his title. There are several interviews with law enforcement and legal representatives of the state at the time and they're laughing and joking when this is all going on, in fact they're making jokes in the court room with Bundy. This guy was an extremely broken individual but it was confounded by the ineptness surrounding it all, he should have had several psyche tests and spent the rest of his days paying for his crimes in some shit hole IMO. There are still many murders that he didn't own up to, i believe.

This is the judges post sentencing speech to Bundy:

"It is ordered that you be put to death by a current of electricity, that that current be passed through your body until you are dead.

Take care of yourself, young man. I say that to you sincerely; take care of yourself. It is an utter tragedy for this court to see such a total waste of humanity, I think, as I’ve experienced in this courtroom.

You’re a bright young man. You’d have made a good lawyer and I would have loved to have you practice in front of me, but you went another way, partner. I don’t feel any animosity toward you. I want you to know that."

How fucking weird, to almost show sympathy to a guy that has been proven (at that point) to have killed two women in the way that he did.

I watched it over the weekend. Although compelling, it was quite unpleasant to watch to be honest.

I suspect the judge spoke to him like that because he presented himself well and was well educated. The fact he was white and middle class or at least had the appearance of being, will have influenced it in those times even more so than now. Serial Killer wasn't really a known phrase at this point and I don't think he fit the stereotype of a murderer. Bizzare that he was allowed to represent himself to that extent though.

Some pretty terrible mistakes made at various stages by all, which meant several women died that shouldn't have (obviously none should have been killed but most were avoidable), but I think it was a very different time and the lack of communication between law enforcement was something that unfortunately went in his favour.

At the end I thought his mother was a bit of a wrong 'un and his girlfriend from during and after the trial needs locking up too - absolute nutjobb. You have to pity the child he fathered.

The thing that confused me the most was when everyone kept saying he was normal and charming, when you heard him in court he actually came across the complete opposite. The clip where he is cross-examining the detective who first saw one of the bodies and asking him for very specific details of the scene, which have no relevance to the defence, i could not believe he was not thrown out by that judge. It was all really weird IMO, and you're probably right about the young, white and educated thing.

W.r.t his mum, i read an article where the family of Bundy have claimed that his mother was abused by her dad who was known in the community as a hot head and a bit of a psycho himself (he would kick dogs and spin cats in the air by their tails, apparently :S). There is a suggestion from his family that he may then have been the product of incest and that would explain why she also came across as a basket case.

I just finished the Swedish cop series 'Before We Die'
Sub titles of course, but a 10 parter with a great storyline about a sort of gangster family and some biker gangs

Really enjoyed it.

That would explain a lot I suppose. The documentary didn't really delve into his father at all.

That clip they showed in the courtroom of him cross examining was disturbing but we didn't see it in context, so it might not have been how it appeared - where he just seemed to be getting off on the details.

Maybe not, but they were using his auto interview as commentary to it where he was talking in the 3rd person basically saying someone like that would get off on the thoughts of it.

Cheers, sounds interesting.

Wasn't 'Mindhunter' based on the sh*t show that was Bundy's and others original profiling??

The director of that Bundy doc also has a film coming out later this year with Zac Efron as Bundy.

Mindhunter's character was based on the FBI's most famous profiler, John E Douglas. I believe he did interview Bundy along with other psychos, they used those interviews to create the profiles that criminal investigations used to profile the serial killers.

Yep saw that the other day, thought Efron was a weird choice but he actually seems to be pulling it off in the trailer. But i do feel uneasy about it because this is exactly what Bundy wanted, towards the end of the documentary he's told by one of the interviewers that they're going to release a book about him and he says he doesn't care as long as it sells, so basically he wanted infamy.
