TV Series

Need a bit of feedback on an old series. Two or three years back, on a whim, I rented The Leftovers, first series. I was intrigued by the premise of it, mainly. I like these crazy ideas.
Now I do understand that they didn't want to simply take the road of “What in the hell happened to the disappeared people?!” That would have been the obvious road to take. Instead, they wanted to study a specific community, from different points of view, in the aftermath of the trauma. I get that. There's a potential to that.
Well, I confess that I had difficulty getting through to the end of the series. I didn't find the acting very good, and the screenplay seemed to me to be all over the place. It seemed like a series that didn't really know in which direction it wanted to go. I was downright bored by certain episodes. I sometimes had to steel myself to turn the thing on. But when I've paid for something, I watch it to the bitter end!
I suppose that there must be fans of it on here. I read just now that the second and third series were considered to be much, much stronger. I thought I might give them a shot, but I'd be interested to hear from someone who had approximately my experience for the first series, and who was then “converted”, as it were. That would carry weight with me.

I notice in general that I very often have the ‘meh’ reaction to the first series of multi-series pieces. Sometimes I change my mind — big time. I was not fully convinced by the first series of Breaking Bad, for instance. Even in the second series, I wasn't fully into it. About halfway through the second series, something clicked, and I never looked back. Same with Better Call Saul. It took me a long time to get into it, but I perservered, and was finally glad that I did.
On the strong recommendation of a friend, I paid for The Last Kingdom. I never even finished the series. It's still in my library, sitting there.
Same with GOT, and The Wire. Saw one whole series of each (the first) and was simply not convinced. Never went back. I know that there are people who will throw up their hands in horror. That's how it was for me.

I get that 'The Wire' can feel slow but as a whole the show is incredible. The writing is second to none, probably the best piece of TV I have ever watched. You can't sit and watch it with your phone in and out of your hand though, needs focus.

Anyone watched 'From'? Two episodes in and not exactly gripping me like i thought it might. Heard really good things about it so that's why i've tried it.
We enjoyed it ourselves, the 3rd series is due out this month in the US at least, I can't find a release date or channel for the UK annoyingly.

I never, ever watch any series, or indeed film that I've rented, like that. One should give it a fair crack of the whip, I believe. I have a good size state-of-the-art desktop Mac, decent size screen, excellent image, and I settle down of an evening in my comfy armchair, preferably with a glass of wine or beer in hand. Not infrequently, I put good headphones on (Bose) to get the best quality sound. I wouldn't watch anything more than a very short clip from a match on a mobile.
I have to say that I am now sick to death of all series and films about drugs and drug dealers. I've seen plenty, some were good, but I'm really not fascinated with that world. BB and BCS were my farewell to that theme. It would have to be something absolutely astonishing to make me go back there. Same with Scorsese films. I want to see no more films about gangsters, and especially the mafia. Had it with all that.

Kudos for making it to the end of the series, we never made it to the end of episode 2 I think. The fact that it's the same team who made the nonsense that was Lost probably did give us some pre-conceived bias. Perhaps I'll try it again myself.

Anyone knows what platform both this and Good Omens can be found on?

Edit: I found The Leftovers on the Sky Go app and Good Omens on Prime.

I myself rent off Apple TV and ITunes. I'm afraid I'm very locked into the Apple world (not that I love the way they go about things in the “empire” which supposedly started off in a garage as a little David fighting against Goliath!). I've thought about subscribing to Netflix, but having really tried it out for several years (courtesy of a friend who signed me up) there just isn't that much that seems unmissable on it. Then you've got to have a bloody subscription to Amazon Prime, to Disney Channel, to this that and the other!
Leftovers is on Apple and I think one or two other platforms.
When I really can't get hold of something, whether film or series, and I genuinely want to see it, I ask a friend who can get anything, it would seem. I ask no questions about the provenance. But by and large, I'm a good boy, who pays for what he watches (and listens to, music wise).

The Perfect Couple on Netflix. Glossy whodunnit starring TAFKA Nicole Kidman who has a very odd face (although i'm sure she'd say the same about me). 6 episodes.

3.5/10. Barely watchable soap opera garbage with some odd direction. I watched it just to see whodunnit. I'm not sure i'd recommend others to do the same.
managed a couple of episodes and then gave up it was absolute rubbish.

“Alone”Series 11 -Artic Circle.

Commented a few times in here about Alone.

Great program. Only ‘reality show’ I watch.

Really enjoyed Season 11.

As much as I love it I think for season 12 they should try something different to spice it up. Maybe try the 2 people idea again that they did in season 4?

Still livid about the disastrous UK version which I was looking forward to but it ended up being utterly shit.

Where to start…. Its hard to describe it.

It could be one of the best box sets I’ve ever watched.
However, while I was watching it I never really knew what was going on. Like you, while watching I thought, what is this? I wasn’t dying to watch the next episodes like some shows make you do.

It’s not edge of your seat stuff but it’s sort of weirdly intriguing and you just keep going.

Only when I finished it all, I thought, actually that was a really really good show.
The music score all the way through it is brilliant as well. Piano/violin certainly sets the mood.

I’d highly recommend it.
It has great reviews and it went under the radar when it was out.

You do have to watch all 3 seasons to get to fully understand it In my view.

This was my reply in this chat to another forum member last year about The Leftovers.

It’s the only show I’ve ever seen where during watching it I wasn’t particularly loving it but when I had finished it all I realised it was actually really good.
