I imagine having too many stores in low footfall season combined with high rent was a key factor. I personally don't think they did much wrong with most stores looking modern and offered "order online, collect in store". High streets are just dead.
Cost of raw materials and production are through the roof in China, so would have been tough to keep prices down whilst maintaining a healthy margin.
