Type 2 diabetes

Can be cured by losing weight.
Not really a surprise to be honest. Think of the money the NHS could save if they simply stapled obese patients mouth shut for a couple of weeks instead of a lifetimes supply of insulin and doctors appointments.

Thought that was common knowledge. I didn't realise that it was necessary to fund researchers to tell us what I thought everyone already knew.

At best it maybe an old wives tale, medically speaking Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease.
It's more than an old wives tale. This is from the NHS website.
By eating healthily, losing weight (if you're overweight) and exercising regularly you may be able to keep your blood glucose at a safe and healthy level without the need for other types of treatment.

There's plenty of information in there that associates Type 2 diabetes with obesity, although it's not the only factor.

But that isn't curing it though, thats controlling it. You still have type 2 diabetes at that point but exercise and diet help keep the blood glucose level down rather than insulin doing it for you.
What's the difference in practical terms? If you have no symptoms and are not taking any medication it's almost the same as not having it.

A massively limited diet and still increased risks of heart attack and other issues etc and will eventually degrade to the point where you cant control it long term.

I know a few people with it and at least 1 person who died from it, believe me if there is a cure this is a good thing.

Type 2 Diabetics don't take insulin and I am sure they are no bigger cost to the NHS than smokers

Not strictly true. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 2 years ago when i was 45. Was and is linked to weight and lifestyle and i was put straight onto Insulin and Metformin, both twice a day.

Sounds like you're describing Type 1 diabetes. I had a relation who had type 1, he lost his sight and his feet and ultimately died in his mid 40s. Another relation had/has type 2. He lost some weight and is living pretty much a normal life.

Nope, Type 2, I also know a couple of people with type 1, A mates mum died while exercising to help get her blood glucose down after being diagnosed with Type 2, she had a heart attack while swimming at the local leisure center.

All the issues with type 1 can occur with type 2 if its badly controlled, controlling it will help a lot but its still a really bad thing to have.

There is no doubt type 1 can effect far more though and quicker.
