UEFA Youth League vs Sevilla, KO 5pm, Academy Stadium

One of the best things I saw in this game was when Nemane was striding forward in the first half quite early on and the Sevilla player (think he was their striker) tracked him and pulled his shirt and dragged him down.

I know that's not purist football and not playing the game in the right way either, but it's what our players need to learn more of. As much as we're trying to perfect the skill of football - the passing, the movement, the touch and technique, sometimes you need to win ugly and you need to bring someone down, take the yellow and regroup. I thought Sevilla did that quite well, La Liga is generally full of play acting and a lot more free kicks so I don't want to see our younger lads being taught to do that but I think they need to develop that side of the game.

At this level there should also be an emphasis on results as well as performance. 1-0 up and in an attacking position with time running out, take it to the corner. Vieira made some odd subs and it wasn't a great performance but we're in a good position in the group and should qualify.

If this wasn't a youth match there would have been more yellows and their corresponding red cards. I hope to hell we never "teach" them tricks like that.

I'm not talking about teaching them to hack the opposition. I'm talking about educating them about the dark arts of the game. They'll need to know it if only to learn how to play against those that use those tricks. Players like Diego Costa are more and more common these days. They'll draw a foul or go to ground in order to win a free kick and they'll take a yellow card on halfway if it stops a player possibly creating a goal scoring opportunity. We'd be mad not to teach the youngsters this side of the game. That way, when we play a team that's looking to implement those tricks and tactics, we're wise to it.
