For my two penneth worth I feel the best way the Government can deal with this would be by coming out and telling us a) what they are going to do about the people who are landing on our beaches daily and b) what their plans are for dealing with the people who are already here awaiting their asylum application to be processed. So far their silence has been deafening other than to say they are going to set up a special border task force. Isn't that just a rehash of what the Tories haven't done over the last decade or so? We really do need positive action and leadership if we are to silence these mindless thugs and lunatics.

FWIW I don’t think anyone (well 99%) of the people here would consider an honest sober conversation about immigration to be ‘far right’ or racist. I certainly wouldn’t. The problem is that the vast majority of these conversations aren’t really honest because they place artificial constraints around the discussion, which is also why most Governments won’t be honest about it either - they know what a sustainable solution is likely to cost.

If you want to genuinely solve the problem, looking at it solely as an issue when refugees get to Calais simply won’t work. You’ve got to do something about the routes they use to get from wherever they’re fleeing from to northern France and something about why they’re leaving where they were in the first place. That requires proper international coordination ( this is a Western European problem, not just a British one), real investment in international aid and an understanding of how foreign policy, international aid and economics all interact - all stuff we’ve been conspicuously terrible at in the last 30 years, for the most part. It’ll mean facing some unpleasant truths about our own role in creating the problems the developing world is facing (why will one in 10 kids in Afghanistan die before their first birthday or why is life expectancy in the Central African Republic just over 50) because if you ignore these things and don’t attempt to solve them at source people will just keep coming. If we can have that honest conversation we might get closer to a real solution. What previous governments have done is the equivalent of applying germolene to a sucking chest wound. Sure, it won’t get infected, but infection isn’t what’s gonna kill you. For context, the population of Africa will increase by 50% in the next 25 years.

Totally agree. Just said the same to my wife.

There's some unrest in Bangladesh, with "protesters" attacking police, 90 dead, 10000 detained, I don't support that sort of intervention, but we definitely need a more active defence against these thugs.

You're right, MPs shouldn't pander to their constituent's NIMBYism. And not just when it comes to asylum seekers. Sometimes constituents need to be told hard truths they don't want to hear. Like for instance that they'll get their hotel back once we've fixed the broken asylum system and backlog, and that it isn't the fault of the people in these hotels that they're in this situation. I doubt the people currently burning it down have been confronted with that truth. This goes back to what I said before, these people are often never challenged on their opinions at any point, they never see consequences or pushback, and that emboldens them to do things like this. And nodding dog sycophant MPs "hearing their concerns" is absolutely not helping.

And Labour need to get a really firm handle on the discussion over the next week, lest we cede more ground to these reprehensible thugs. Do not give their hate an inch in the conversation.
