UK State Pension

Never said you was mate, but its an often quoted thing "well its means tested in Australia so why not here", by proponents of means testing the state pension in the UK.
which is about as relevant as saying "they don't have a national health service in 'merica so we might as well get rid of ours"

And some countries like Denmark, Norway, and Iceland have a retirement age of 67 for both men and women.

And in communist China.

Starting January 1, 2025, China is gradually raising its statutory retirement age over 15 years to address an aging population. The new targets are 63 for men (up from 60), 58 for white-collar women (up from 55), and 55 for blue-collar women (up from 50). The increase is implemented incrementally, starting with small increases every few months.

I wonder if the fact that people are living longer on average than they used to then it warrants a later age qualification.
I suppose at a mid eighties age I am getting value but many of my friends died early and some actually never reached pension age but had paid in all their lives.

My other pensions are obviously helpful but we're raided by Gordon Brown some years ago.

Life expectancy has actually fallen in the UK and was falling prior to the Covid pandemic. As always falls in life expectancy and average life expectancy for that matter is not evenly distributed across the country.

Blackpool is the worst at 73.1 for males.

The best is Hart in Hampshire at 83.7.

So more than 10yrs difference depending where you live, the main driver being the level of social and economic deprivation.

If the average age of death reduces will that affect the age of pension entitlement?

Or in 20 years time all those pensioners will be dead leaving the cash to their kids who can then buy a house with it, oh wait the cunts in government will death tax them do they won’t get it all. I agree with you there will be a big crisis but who is to blame, what is the profit to a builder on a house these days? Seems the average around even a shithole like Oldham is £270k, maybe limit profits to bring prices down, don’t tell me builders won’t make them, they just won’t make as much money. Even if they built 2/3 million new homes overnight does anyone think builders will reduce their prices, not a chance unless there are more houses than buyers which will never happen because like in the USA conglomerates are buying up housing and inflating their prices.
Southern wankers buying property in the North just for profit as well will drive up house prices. See it regularly on Homes under the Hammer, houses in the North East targeted by London fuckers as they’re getting bigger returns and no doubt paying cash to a lot of tradesmen working for them.

One of this country's biggest problems is that housing is way too costly in proportion to typical wages.

Sadly, it has taken decades to get where we are, and there is no simple answer. Even if the government decided to build 1 million council homes a year, there are not enough tradespeople available to do the work.

One solution that has failed is the free market. But most politicians have an undying faith in it. They are every bit as much blinkered ideologues as any Marxist.

But, if, somehow, you could halve the cost of mortgages and rent, it would solve most ordinary people's issues overnight. Too bad magic wands don't work.

A lot of this is probably driven by landlords using property to generate a pension.

In 'Communist' China, life expectancy is also lower though. I guess that would balance things out somewhat.

See the 'selling a house' thread..
No wonder the housing market is fucked up

I have never expected to get the state pension and always thought it would be scrapped by the time i would be old enough. Add to that my itinerant lifestyle for 20 years and big gaps in NI payments.
Actually got a letter this week telling me i will be eligible for it in 5 years time..

Just throwing this out there. As there is a natural housing crisis, why not cap the number of homes an individual can own to say, one.
Good idea in essence but for practicality sakes there needs to be some leeway. My other half owns a second home in theory but her sister and husband live in it, they couldn’t get a mortgage so we took on a Landlords mortgage on the house and they pay us back monthly, exactly what we pay out so no profit on our part.

It’s complicated, we had to get a Financial Advisor involved and it led to us having 4 insurance policies between us to cover for all eventualities the highest one being death to any of the parties included.

Because there isn't anywhere near enough social housing available, would be the simple answer. It would make homelessness an even larger problem.

I’m sure you know you can make up some of that 20 gap by paying in for the next 5 years, you need 35 years now for the full state pension but every year will increase your award.

I was self employed for the last 12 years of my working life and I think I was only paying £2.70 a week NI when I retired, was well worth it, my State Pension from April is worth 13,543 which is more than others of my generation.
