One of this country's biggest problems is that housing is way too costly in proportion to typical wages.
Sadly, it has taken decades to get where we are, and there is no simple answer. Even if the government decided to build 1 million council homes a year, there are not enough tradespeople available to do the work.
One solution that has failed is the free market. But most politicians have an undying faith in it. They are every bit as much blinkered ideologues as any Marxist.
But, if, somehow, you could halve the cost of mortgages and rent, it would solve most ordinary people's issues overnight. Too bad magic wands don't work.
