ULEZ Letter

The stupid thing about the whole thing is that it's completely arbitrary. The technical difference between a Euro5 and a Euro6 engine isn't massive which is ironic when anyone quotes compliance. This also assumes that the vehicle manufacturers haven't cheated the tests and actually the technical emissions quoted are a complete load of bollocks anyway.

Pollution has obviously improved but Co2 associated transport emissions have barely changed over the last 40 years which proves that in terms of Co2 alone forcing the adoption of new engine technology is pointless. This isn't because the engines aren't better, it's because the engines are better however there are 100x more cars on the road.

We really should be helping people to go electric or use public transport but public transport will be on its arse for a long time so going electric is the only option. If I want to go into town today then I could take the bus instead of my car but the irony is the bus will pollute more than my electric car and cost more than a full charge!

Why are you talking about Co2?

The main difference between Euro 5 and Euro 6 is that:

Euro 5 engines focused largely on carbon dioxide emissions (CO2), while Euro 6 is primarily focused on reducing nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx).

Euro 5 engines required all diesel cars to have particulate filters (DPFs) to trap microscopic pieces of soot, while Euro 6 engines made selective catalytic reduction (SCR) or AdBlue systems mandatory for diesel cars to reduce NOx emissions.

Just heard Khan on LBC and he was quite convincing in his approach now that he has implemented the extra funding for the scrap page scheme.

Also mentioned the disinformation and untruths spread by the Tories prior to the Uxbridge bye-election and really does shed some light on how low they will go to stay in power.

I mentioned previously i was looking at buying a van but need euro 6, I’m on lots of van groups on Facebook, seems Mr Khan is getting his way the amount of vans going up for sale is silly, poor bastards in London are losing thousands on perfectly good vans as no one seems to want euro 5 vans, I wonder why!

Why do you need Euro 6 if you aren't making regular trips into the ULEZ ?

You can just get one of these Euro 5 bargains and then pay to pollute on the occasional trip.

Your leccy must be cheap and you must weigh a lot.

You do realise you don't get the whole bus to yourself?

Because when it comes to Manchester I’ll have to pay to get off my drive it do you think I should spunk £25k on the off chance it doesn’t ?

If it's not a daily driver will it be such a big issue?

There aren't any plans for a similar ULEZ scheme in Manchester at the moment.

You are talking about something that might not come in for longer than you actually have the van.

As someone who recently moved to London, and lives about 200 yards from the South Circular, it's desperately needed. They also need to do more to reduce the number of cars full stop, as it's choca-bloc 24/7. I'm currently just outside ULEZ, but will be slap bang in it in 3 weeks time. The level of cars and pollution down here is on a different planet to Manchester.

I've had to sell my car (back up north, as no one would touch it down here) and get a petrol. Ideally wanted an electric, but without any serious government help, it's waaaay out of my budget, and most peoples i imagine.

never hit the ground running,my guess it will be put on the burner within a couple of weeks then dropped for the next mayor elections in may, anti ULEZ gathering pace

This prick does realise they will just replace the camera's and he is adding to the overall cost of running the ULEZ scheme? Furthermore the camera's are all over the shop so you will just be lulled into a false sense of security passing a place where you'd expect one to be then find yourself in a spiders web

He's also filmed himself admitting criminal acts and inciting others to copy him.

He'll be up before the court in no time at all.

A full electric charge for me is around £3 which gives about 250 miles. You can barely travel a few miles on the bus around here for £3 and definitely forget the train as it's too expensive. Public transport just isn't an option for me for 99% of my journeys, it's only good for travel into Manchester because of the price of parking but I only do that perhaps once a month.

Here's a good example, I'm off to Horwich to the cinema later on. The train station is up the road and stops at Horwich but a return ticket is £12 multiplied by two of us so £24.... I could drive instead and it will cost me virtually nothing so which would should I pick?

I know that schemes like the ULEZ don't apply to most cars at the moment but you can absolutely bet that they soon will because the whole point of them really is to raise money. It's why they're now talking up per-mile consumption taxes on electric cars which contribute zero to pollution, it's all about money.

If they were serious about pollution or the environment then as Rascal mentioned they'd just forget taxes, ULEZ's, congestion charges etc etc and make public transport free but that isn't on the table so it must be about money. If the train was free tonight then I'd use it but it isn't, it's too expensive and because it's also so unreliable it's far easier to use the car anyway.

Just checked my 2 cars one of which is a 2.5d jeep cherokee so yes that is free of the ULEZ,my previous car a 1.5d renault megan would not be but however was 30 pounds a year road tax for low emissions

You are aware that all cars including EV's shed pollution in the form of rubber tyre detritus as tyres wear down and brake dust as the pads wear down - that makes up most of that shit in the gutters that stain your shoes if you stand in it

Few points :-)

The discussion was about diesal euro 5 vans so I presumed you were saying if you had an electric vehicle rather than actually owning one so thumbs up on that score.

secondly in terms of pollution, which is the concern, then as I said you getting on a bus won't add pollution as its already on the road. Buses will eventually,(I hope,) be electric or hydrogen.

Thirdly bus travel in Manchester is £2 so hardly expensive(not sure where the £3 you quoted comes from)

And lastly £3 to fully charge a vehicle for 250 miles? Really?

Either you believe this planet is seriously warming up or not.

Some people think it's all a big con and just an excuse for governments to squeeze money out of us. If you believe that, naturally you'll hate things like ULEZ.

If on the other hand, you believe the science, then the reality is we face some painful adjustments. Things like ULEZ are probably a minor thing compared to what is to come. We might only be allowed to eat meat once a week or something. Imagine that! Sausage butty on Monday and then no meat for 7 days. This sort of shit won't be popular, because it can't be. No one likes losing what they've had all their life.

I think there’s a bit of exaggeration there.
The very best you get from an EV is 5 miles/kWh and the cheapest off peak tariff online is 7.5p per unit, so with the most efficient car driving in perfect conditions that would be 50kWh at 7.5p so that would be £3.75. Real life’s not like that though and more realistic usage would be 3 miles per kWh and most people don’t get away with just using those very cheap rates all the time, so for everyday use you’re probably looking at double that. Still cheap though unless you don’t have the off peak tariffs. Without those tariffs, costs are broadly comparable to petrol or diesel with the current price of electricity.
