ULEZ Letter

just put false plates on your car if it doesn't comply
i'll get me coat.
i got a speeding ticket a couple of weeks ago but i was nowhere near the location given.
i rang up and the person i spoke to said oh you've been cloned, just send email us pictures of your car wich i did and the fine was cancelled

if the Tories had let him and others subsidise bus and tube fares from the rates, that would have cut congestion and pollution.
That's a general disconnect with all these allegedly 'green' initiatives. Going back to the upgrading of roads, building the motorway network, the beeching cuts etc we encouraged / forced car ownership. Now we are seeking to encourage folk back onto public transport that is no longer joined up, frequent enough or affordable. Not really a London specific point, but if we were sincere about going green rather than just raising cash public transport should be free or very cheap

We were well aware in the 80s of the damage from internal combustion engines, and the environmental benefits of public transport. First the Tories came for the rate-subsidised fares, then they came for the councils' funding so the councils cut contracts for socially-desirable bus routes, now they're after the climate change experts.

If you can afford a compliant car no tax, if you can’t afford to the change the car Ulez tax, the less well off being penalised, it’s fucking ridiculous.

Aberdeen, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Dundee, Aberdeen, Edinburgh. Nobody cared a fuck about their poor and they have a much poorer public transport provision

This has been a common complaint but it's been pretty comprehensively disproven.

The less well off in Greater London don't use cars. The less well off are more likely to be living in high pollution areas.

Difference is those charges mainly apply to just the City Centres, in London it’s across all boroughs plus they have the congestion charge to contend with. There’s a couple of others I know of as well, Sheffield and Bath, they’re definitely City Centres only.

I also didn’t post “poor”, I stated “less well off”!

That article starts off with “the very poorest in society” not the “less well off”.

I think the vast section of people affected that are not being talked about are tradesmen living just outside the zone but now incurring costs to drive into it daily. A bloke (electrician) I was fishing with at the weekend reckons that with congestion charge, ulez and parking (massive van admittedly) it's £97 a day in total for him to do a job in London now. There again, the £12.50 ulez is only a small part of that I suppose.

Does the M1 run through Sheffield city centre? Only the last few times I have driven down there its restricted to 60mph for "cleaner air" - not a charge I know though each journey I make along that stretch I do see a Police car patrolling so I guess for some unlucky sods the charge comes in the form of a fine and 3 points

Tradesmen and businesses will just pass the cost onto the customer. The day rate for a plumber is about £400-500 in London so you’re talking about a 2% price increase. Electricians are more like £300 so it’s roughly 4%, but they’re more likely to do multiple jobs a day and can split it between all their customers.

Thing is each city does it differently so Sheffield doesn’t charge private cars but Birmingham and London do.

The point I was making is all those places have them and not a peep was raised by those in the media and in politics but the London one has sparked outcry
