Antrincham my fucking arse. He's got a few quid, moved to Hale and picked that team because its the closest.

Is that true? I've not heard it before.
His brothers are definitely Bolton supporters but people who knew him from his days reffing in the NW Counties League say he was a regular at Old Trafford in those days. Mike Riley was told this when he came to the Etihad in 2012.

Bizarrely, Riley also claimed that referee appointments are designed to avoid any conflicts of interest (e.g. a City fan refereeing the rags). Yet Mason, the self-professed Bolton fan, had just (controversially) refereed a game at Old Trafford between the rags & QPR despite the latter being in a relegation battle with his supposed team.

Riley appeared quite surprised when he was asked how could this not be a clear conflict of interest. It genuinely hadn't seemed to occur to him.

...and doesn't he have some relation in their academy and he is often seen down there??

Cheers.

I can't remember who it was (Gallagher maybe) who described Riley as a robot, a programmable ref rather than someone with a feel for the game. His complete invisibility, and that Arsenal match, don't help create an impression of competence. Having the refs paid by the PL rather than the FA just adds to that impression.
