Ragcafe is scary, the levels of delusion and how they've gobbled up the media narrative is truly a sight to behold :

  • League place isn't important
  • If they win the EL they'll have had a great season
  • They've won a trophy this year so ( some of them actually are saying this ) they've had a better season than Spurs!!!
  • The injuries have been cruel and a massive factor
  • Peg is still one of the best managers around
It's unreal.

Unfortunately if this happens then yes they will
Two cups (even if they are the least aspired to) and qualification to next year's CL has to be classed as a very good season

However if they don't win the Thursday night cup and finish 5th or sixth in the Prem, then even though they won the League cup it has to be judged as a poor season

For a club that claims to be ( incorrectly ) the biggest club in the world, finishing 5th or 6th in your home league is an epic failure, whether you win two tin pot trophies that you wouldn't want at the start of the season.

They were already in the Europa League, so why not go out to win it. We tried and failed!

I agree that 5th or 6th in the league isn't success, but if they do win the EL then that gives what they ultimately want, CL Football

No trophy is tin pot

Not really. For the so-called biggest club in the world I'd say this season has been pretty poor. In a cup game anybody can beat anybody else - hence giant killing. In league games consistency is the key, keeping it going over the entire season. That, to me, will always be the litmus test for any club. In the Europa League the rags have had it so bloody easy you'd swear it was fixed. The quality of most of the opposition has been Championship/League One standard at best, and the rags have stumbled over the finishing line more by luck than merit.
For a club of that size and with that much money in the coffers, most people expected more than just a tin-pot trophy and a field of Galacticos playing hoofball.

If, for instance, Bournemouth, or Watford had ended the season with the League Cup and a chance of C.L. football next season, then I'd say: "Fair play. With the tight budget you (for want of a better word) 'smaller' teams are forced to operate with, this season has been a great success. Respect".
But for the rags, they've no cause for celebrating because what Peg has delivered -considering the tools at his disposal- has been a poor return for the outlay.

Agreed but if you don't win it then your aim is champions league football. As it stands they fail and will squeeze in the back door if they win the Europa so I would say two cups and CL qualification isn't a bad season. It's certainly better than ours if you take final league standing aside. I would just love them to fuck up tonight or the final. All their eggs are in this basket and I'd love them to break all over Jose's face.

I said in this thread at the start of the season I wanted them to get into the final and lose as it would harm their league form. I am half right so far!

I guess it's more the delusion I'm highlighting. When they drew with us it was 'Jose knew a point still left us in the driving seat for a top 4 finish, it wasn't pretty but it was genius' roll forward like a week to the arsenal game 'we were never in for fourth anyway, we've had so many injuries, we're focusing on the EL' they're full of sh!t

If they win the EL at the end of the day they'd have had a better season than anyone in the country besides Chelsea. Ultimately they'd enter CL at the same stage as Spurs with 2 more trophies, regardless of what they are, in the cupboard.

I don't have confidence in Celta to turn it around, so come on, Ajax.

Yeah the thing that annoyed me is how it is seen as great tactics and makes sense for Jose to prioritise the Europa. He HAS to prioritise it because HE and HIS team have underperformed massively in the league. I think the City game he thought they was still in it as winning their games in hands would of had them above Liverpool. I think it was the Swansea home game and another draw that seen him change his mind-set a bit. Even Sunday though it was back in their hands with Liverpool drawing, he just had no faith in them winning at Arsenal/Spurs away.

I suspect that they will win the Europa cup this year and therefore get CL football, but that doesn't mean everything in the garden is rosey. They still play bland slow football, they have a manager who always opts for a safety first approach and slowly alienates himself from his players.

They will no doubt improve next year but so will we, there is little to be afraid of and we shouldn't be overly concerned about them anymore.

This will be another season where we finish above them in the league and our future looks a lot brighter than theirs.

That will quickly change if they don't win europa and end up 6th.
