Maureen has come out and said "tonight is the biggest match in our history" just about sums those wankers up !

It is two different arguments and is scary how some can't see it. If it is about entertainment and footballing styles I would rather watch us all day every day. If at the start of the season you was given these two options then I would imagine 99% of people would say yeah I'd take two cups and a CL position over no trophies and 3rd at best.

Well I wouldn't, I know the trophies won sounds great, but we're building something here, they aren't. In 3 years they'll still be playing catch up due to such shortermism management from top to bottom. They can brag all they want about the league cup and maybe Europa but deep down they know their fucked.
So 2 minor trophies but not building for the future or building but taking a hit now. I'd take the latter.

I understand your viewpoint, ordinarily a couple of minor trophies would be sufficient for a club being run on a shoestring budget, but the rags have gone out and quite literally thrown money around in the hope of improving their situation - and you have to say they have failed, because they have not improved their situation. The've outspent everybody these last few years and all they've effectively done is tread water. They have shown absolutely no signs of moving in the right direction since the Pisscan went, that much is plain to see. They've stagnated to the point where back door qualification to CL football is now seen as 'success'.

The 'winning trophies' versus 'playing good football' argument will always depend upon which team you support and what you value most. But as fans we should not cherry-pick, only use the bits that suit our viewpoint, we should look upon the season as a whole. And to this end I just cannot see how, many years down the line, any rag would look back on this season and say it was a success.

I'm rather enjoying the presumption that the EL is as good as theirs. It minimises the achievement if they win it but, oh Lordy, if they don't....

And Fate can be a fIckle mistress.

Assuming United do get through to the final, Ajax will not be the pushovers they are expecting to be facing.

Next season's shirt sponsor?

Does Sixt rent out buses too?

Agreed, but for me you can see a clear vision and way forward for us.
Pep starts next season looking to improve a few obvious flaws and improve our squad. On our day we still look the best team in the league and can match anyone currently and will hopefully improve.

Regardless of what they win, they will start next season as the sixth best team in the league and in terms of football a mile behind.
PEG basically needs to start again.

On paper Arsenal could win the FA Cup and scrape 4th, is that a better season than Spurs?
But in reality they're miles behind Spurs.

I think the gap between United and the top teams is as great as it's been for a long while, a floodlight cup & a back door entrance can't hide their clear deficiencies!

Good post.
