Absolutely they do ..... he needs to come looking for the ball instead of standing in one area grappling with central defenders, and use his strength and pace to run into spaces where players can actually find him with passes.

Pep prefers to put square pegs in round holes, like he prefers to play midfielders like Nunes and O'Reilly as fullbacks, for me it just doesn't work, unless you are playing poor teams. Maybe they're good going forward but an accident waiting to happen when a team presses or uses fast breaks like United did yesterday.
When we bought Ait Nouri I thought at last a recognized left back but what happens is he sits on the bench for 90% of the game at United. He's hardly played even before Afcon. So why did we buy him ? Pep baffles me sometimes.
All the players we have bought in the last year and a half only one of them has been a fullback and we have never replaced Kyle Walker.
Defensively we have been weak all season. And we will remain so until we play proper full backs imo.

Every outfield player today played against Toon. How often do you actually see all outfield players from a League Cup game turning out in a derby just 3.5 days later? And all of the outfield players, except Foden and Aït-Nouri, were involved in the game against Exeter. That says something about the injury situation in our squad, and perhaps about our priorities as well.

deffo will watch Arse-rags game next week to see how much of this countering will be allowed by Arteta and how he counters it. guess it will be a game heavily focused on set pieces.

Missing Nunes Dias Gvardiol Nico G killed us today in all honesty..
Pep fucked up by playing Lewis and Ake as full backs..neither have any pace in the position you need it most when you play the rags.
Definitely need to give Erling a rest as he's either carrying an injury or he's fucking shattered.
Might be worth playing Sem upfront in his place for the Bodo game.
The lack of fight was what pissed me off most though..
A fucking Derby and we looked half hearted..

However, he’s managed to get this squad to 2nd in the league, the final of the Caraboe, almost knock out stages of the Champs League and we’ll see about the FA Cup

That isn’t easy with Nunes at right back, no goal scoring wingers and a midfielder at left back

Five months into the season and no club is in a false position - no cuddas, wuddas and shuddas. Three of the regular back four out and you can get away it for a few games but eventually it shows in terms of cohesion. That said, United have spent megazillions to set up against two young CBs in a low block and hit us on the break. Utd at home - 30 per cent possession. Yes, they counter attacked pretty well and did a job on us - Donnarumma had to be at his best and kept us alive. We should have done better for the second - ironically we'd thrown everyone forward in search of an equaliser. Very telling how far Nunes has come under Pep to the extent that when he doesn't play we miss him badly. He defends well and links with the midfield and attack so well. We didn't have that connection today. Dalot's challenge was a red all day long - Doku's knee bent out of shape - echoes of Phil at Newcastle. Today was United on their limit so I'm not overly worried about the rest of the season.

What we all want to see is wingers crossing the ball first time instead of the extra sidestep resulting in Utd doubling/trebling up on Doku etc. Most of all, we want to see sharp incisive balls for Erling to run onto and not today's backspin chipped easy to intercept passes.

After the initial reds excitement dies down, I doubt that many of their fans will be inspired by a ridiculously expensive squad that has 30 per cent possession at home.

HERE WE GO :

1. Well beaten by a team that had more passion, wanted to win every ball and were simply far better all round.
2. How Dalot never got a red fr that viscious challenge I will never understood.
3. Haaland and Foden (key players) both went missing AGAIN.
4. Big shout out for Donarruma who kept the scoreline respectable
5. Im a broken record, but Lewis is not a City player. He did well against Exeter - says it all.
6. It was their cup final. I remember many years ago when it was ours.
7. Still lots to play for if we can get our act into gear, something we managed against Newcastle less than a week before the derby. Its a funny old game.

Most of the passes we try to play through to him are cut out, because we telegraph our intentions to defenders .... we need to be more cunning and vary the passes like KDB used to do ... at times he could be pinpoint with them, at other times he would take defenders by surprise by lobbing or chipping the ball through, or by using the outside of his foot ..... we also need to pass the ball as soon as we can, instead of dallying on it waiting for openings to Haaland to eventually arrive, because we are giving teams time to regroup or organise their defence.

The one most capable of this, by far, is Cherki. At this stage, though, he hasn’t really won Pep’s favour or established himself 100%.
