The substitution of Sane changed the game, making us more expansive. That's not to say Sane changed the game (goal aside), rather it opened us up.
I thought a midfield of Silva, Gundogan and Fernandinho made it look rather congested in the middle.
I feel the need to laud Gundogan yet again, because he gets a bit of stick on social media from City fans; possibly some of whom "didn't get" Garry Barry either.
Once Sane came on, Gundogan, the big game player, stepped up yet again.
He knows where to position himself, his awareness of his surroundings is superb and knows when and where to move for the next pass.
Fernandinho went off and Gundogan just slipped seamlessly into that slightly deeper role.
He's had an extended run in the team recently and he's been fantastic in every game and City are reaping the rewards.
I have huge admiration for those players who fulfil that type of role in the middle; Barry, Fernandinho, Kante, Makelele, Keane, etc; it is a thankless job but an absolutely critical piece of the jigsaw.
Totally agree on your assessment of Gundogan, he needs to be the main man in midfield to shine and showed how good he is once the changes were made. He stopped so many counter attacks last night and I would say he was easily our best player in the second half.
