Why? We are going backwards at an alarming rate. Two years ago we were going to the swamp expecting to score 3/4. Now it seems Pep is frightened of losing. From two seasons of 90 plus points we look like we would struggle to get 80. We never looked like a team unable to score a goal, we now seem to struggle against any decent team
I hear you on the problems we are having.
It is concerning, absolutely, but we’re also going through a transition from our aging players in Dinho, Aguero and now Silva who is gone.
Signs were there with the same problems in midfield as Dinho played more as a centre half and when Aguero was out during last season and it’s more of a progression of the problems that to me is more of a personel issue.
You could say signing Rodri was a mistake but NOT ONE SINGLE OBSERVEER HAD ANY LOUD DOUBTS ABOUT HIS POTENTIAL TO BE THE NEXT BUSQUETS.
Pep had Busquets and saw what he could do. However, he also had Xavi and Iniesta and football has changed a bit. We have KDB, but we no longer have Silva, and our style of football I do sense may require a box-to-box no 6.
Now, thing is Pep might also understandably think AS DID MANY OF OUR FANS that if we just get better defenders that won’t be an issue.
Well, that we do now or have had players come back to form who had been strong and our defending is generally MUCH better, but now we can’t find the creative force that drove the team without more of a creative driving link outside of KDB.
Bernardo has also fallen off a cliff, and was one of our best players. Is that Pep’s fault? If we had old Bernardo we’d be SO much better.
Foden might be it and has IT but what appears to be the issue is central midfield which some had concerns over but I don’t think was rated the highest priority for transfers.
When Pep first arrived we were a mess and he tried open attacking football and was obliterated in some games on the counter.
Now he clearly tries to be more careful against sides like Utd and Liverpool who we KNOW are dangerous there and I think looks mostly for damage control and to sneak out a 1-0 win but better to be 0-0 than lose, especially away.
The season is long and most sides we will attack more. I just think he is trying to learn from his past mistakes while also aware there are changes that need to be made in the squad that will be addressed this summer.
Pep is a football genius. He makes mistakes but so does everyone. I am far from worried we are doomed with him at the helm than almost any other manager, because whilst stubborn, he also is an astute observer and has adapted when he finally realises a change is needed.
Psychologically for the fans I know it’s frustrating, but before the game Pep was downplaying the importance of deby’s in ANY COUNTRY and I don’t think that was a coincidence.
