Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola talking to BBC Match of the Day: "Congratulations to United. People will understand how nice Manchester City is. It was a fantastic game. We controlled the transitions better in the second half against Rashford and their fast players. We had the right spirit to do it. We were close and we have to improve when we concede the goal, be more stable, the gap between the first and second goal is too close. In general I have no regrets. I don't care if we don't win the Carabao Cup or the Premier League, we'll try. I don't care when a team performs how we play. It was quite similar to the many, many years we've been here.

"There are plenty of points to play for and we have to play there. In every game we have to perform. We always play in these sort of games and in others we struggle a little bit."

On the equaliser: "Marcus Rashford is offside, Bruno Fernandes is not. Rashford distracted our keeper and centre defenders. It is what it is. We know where we play. It is difficult for the referees in these stadiums."

On what they could improve: "Maybe our threat up front. Our people up front were not decisive. They run really well and punish us in the counter attack."

After the game: "Nothing happened. I know how we behave. We've finished above them five or six years in a row, I know exactly how we behave."
 
Didn’t see the game but looking at the stats I’m guessing it was an all too familiar toothless display.

We will be scrapping for fourth if something doesn’t change soon.

He said the ref on the pitch and var were correct then went onto say because Rashford didn’t touch the ball twatty could. He was asked but didn’t gashfords position not interfere with play? No said Walton there’s been a rule change this season. Well I’ve not heard it has anybody else?

There’s always a ‘rule change’ when it is against us! Hasn’t that happened at least once before this season when it meant they could give against us? Or am I getting over cynical in my old age?

We were away against a team only 4 points behind and on a sustained run of form. We were never going to play them off the park. It was always going to be a tight, cagey, almost latter stages of the CL type of game. It felt like that for the entire 1st half.

Up until their 1st goal I felt the game plan of retain control and take 1 or 2 of the few clear chances we create, had been executed brilliantly.

Then, a decision beyond bent, changes the whole game. It’s not even worth debating what was clearly offside and clearly a ridiculous decision.

The momentum swung and they caplitalised.

We 100% didn’t deserve to lose that game.

Thought Rodri, who I’m not usually a fan of, was excellent and was the best player on the pitch.

Manchester city was in full control of that game until the officials cheated us, never a more one side game in quality and skill and control by city than, the worst bit of cheating you will see ? how can that not be offside ? Rashford is dancing his feet around the ball after running 20 yards towards the ball after being 5 yards offside, even the linemen puts up his flag after the goal, so again how does the ref give the goal without going to VAR

Has someone pointed out that is not the current law.

The current law could be interpretted as allowing that first Rag goal but I do not think that is the intention of the law and certainly should not be.

In all the examples given in the advisory notes to the laws, it doesn't have anything that is exactly like the situation seen today but example 4 suggests to me that if they did, it would deem Rashford to be interfering with play because he quite simply is.

Do I think he's interfered with how the players played, yes, although if they 'think' he's offside and stop, that's on them not the ref - play to the whistle and all that.
But what I think should be offside and what the law says are different things, and, mistakenly, the PL has so far rejected my version

I mean we've had years to get a left back and they went for Gomez who is barely good enough for the Carabao cup.

No one expected Foden and Gundogan to fall off a cliff and for Bernardo to be want away all season or for Dias, Laporte, Walker and Stones to miss significant game time through injury.

Agree. First half dreadful. Second half much better but we stopped after scoring and then got shafted obviously….. but there is an underlying issue ongoing. We need to snap out of it quick

People saying Akanji should have hustled back quicker, how many times have you seen defenders get too close behind a man running behind the lines, clip their heels, they go down, denial of goal-scoring opportunity + red card. Akanji can't be expected to know with 100% certainty he is offside.

The fact there is a player stood in his way massively impacts his decision making when it comes to attempting to play the ball. No Rashford = Akanji just accelerates and picks it up easily. I don't see how anybody says otherwise. I also think Ederson rushes the ball with no Rashford - he does that all the time (whether it's a good decision for him to do so or not, as demonstrated in the first half).

That's two players who's ability to play the ball is being hampered. Ederson is stuck in position, Akanji is keeping his distance to not make a stupid mistake.
