Manchester United has refuted claims that it is diluting its brand by adopting a policy of signing a multitude of commercial partnerships.
The English Premier League giant has agreed a host of deals with overseas companies over the past year. Indeed, in this month alone United has signed deals with China Construction Bank (CCB) and soft drinks manufacturer Wahaha, along with Indonesian tyre manufacturer Multistrada and Japanese paint manufacturer Kansai. Such an approach saw United post a 13.7% increase in commercial income to £117.6 million when it published its financial results for the year ending June 30, 2012.
That figure will rise again this year and United marketing manager Jonathan Rigby rejects the idea that United has reached its limit. “There is nothing of what we know of our own brand that suggests that is the case,” he said, according to Press Association Sport. “We don’t see that at all. We see an increase in growth in the vibrancy of our brand. In fact we see the opposite. We see a fanbase that is growing, we see engagement levels growing, and we see viewing figures continuing to grow.”
Rigby feels United has not come even close to maximising its commercial potential. “We don’t know how far we can go,” he added. “We certainly don’t think we are reaching a limit. It is a model that is working very well. The evidence I see every day is that our partners get a huge amount and are all able to get their own part of Manchester United.”
