Patrick Barclay wrote in The London Standard pre-match yesterday, but has been suspiciously quiet so far today...

"For a club as admirably committed to the long term as Manchester City, the clock is ticking with significant urgency.

Financial Fair Play dictates it; City have got where they are by spending lots of Sheikh Mansour’s money but now it has to stop for a while if they want to stay in Europe.

So the chance of a second Premier League title in three seasons, the opportunity to establish themselves as serial winners like Chelsea instead of something more like a supercharged version of the Blackburn who came, bought and conquered in 1995, must be taken.

If it is, they are top dogs in Manchester and England and the global market will bow accordingly, helping them to balance the books as Michel Platini sensibly requires and maintaining in substantial measure the financial power that lured the likes of Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero.

If, on the other hand, they miss out as last spring, when Roberto Mancini’s malcontents let an unexceptional Manchester United walk away with Sir Alex Ferguson’s last title, the danger is of standing still, which in football today means going back. Arsenal might also be at risk of doing that.

United’s return to the top four is near-inevitable, sooner or later, because the scale of Old Trafford reflects an infrastructure enabling them to buy as big as is necessary (and the recent interest of United director David Gill in Uefa politics suggests a desire to ensure fair play is closely monitored and transgressors, whether from Manchester or Madrid, sanctioned).

That’s why there was a measure of understatement in yesterday’s assertion by David Moyes that United would compete with City for the high-class players they require. And why City are under the greater pressure in this evening’s fascinating derby. Here and now — tonight and at Arsenal on Saturday — they must seize control."

The man cannot help himself can he?

He is completely unable to write anything other than masked diatribe against City as his bezzy mate's club falls from grace.

Instead of railroading manyoooo, Moyes and Ferguson's appointment of said Moyes, he chooses to deflect these problems by attempting to pinpoint our potential failings.

The irony is that Barclay, unlike Martin Samuel and Henry Winter, hasn't got a fucking clue when it comes to FFP as he's demonstrated both in print and on TV. Bitter, clueless twat.

Is it just me or does that sound like the worst ever Mancunian accent impression you've ever heard? Sounds more like a scouser taking the piss.

He wouldn't even get a comedy part on Corrie with that accent.

I went to College with that fella. He's from Blackley. Don't remember him being into football at all in 93/95. And he puts mayonaise on his chips, the weirdo.

Paddy Barclays best uncapped player in premier league history made a big difference yesterday.

Big thanks to mufc for their consideration of the away section at old trafford.instead of keeping them back for 30 minsafter the final whistle they now release the home fans 30 mins before it.

Wonder if there's any truth in the rumblings that Moyes will be sacked very soon?

If I was United I'd go with a Gary Neville and Giggs double act with previous coaches Phelan, Muelensteen and maybe Scholes and Ferdinand etc. Rest of teh season and maybe next season too unless they see sense and go for Klopp or Simeone. This season is a write-off but so too is next season if they retain the services of The Chosen One.

I'm not privy to any ITK info but from snippets here and there it appears that Woodward has decided he's not up to the task and will be replaced. Ferguson and Charlton are vehemently against sacking him but a few senior players have spoken to 'top brass' and made clear that Moyes is not up to the task and that they need to replace him.

Glazers will look at the share price and see the dip. They will see that Moyes has spent £65mill on Fellaini and Mata and both are poorer than they were at their former clubs. They will look at the form of players at United and how it's dropped, alarmingly so with last seasons key players like RVP, Carrick and Ferdinand (although he's ready to retire). I cannot see them trusting him with £100m+ spending spree, when he's dropped out the top 4 ( that will cost them £35-40m alone) and no sign of an upturn in their performances.

Lets have it fucking right, they spoke of beating the might Olympiakos and West Ham like it was Bayern and Chelsea. There are better teams in the UEFA Cup than Olympiakos and they only dropped out because they played into United's hands by being too open. West Ham are a mid-table side that's expected to be beaten. Once Bayern put United to bed, and the cold light of day shows the cracks, he will be up the road imho. He'd have been sacked by any top club by now, I think the only things in his favour is that Ferguson chose him and that there's few alternatives to replace him at the moment.

The Glazers need to ask themselves a few questions. Would any top club appoint Moyes to manage them next season? Why had no other top club appointed Moyes previously to United giving him the job? Is Moyes showing anything positive that he can take into next season, a foundation of transition? The answers are clearly NO.

Your reasoning is sound to me Nip.
I hope they are forced to keep him another season due to Ferguson and Charlton making it difficult to sack him.
This would result in limbo preventing any direction/plans to be set in motion.

Ferguson has stitched them up proper
