Speaking from my own singular personal experience:
I grew up in the mid 70's with the thinking that city was middle class, and United lower. And then as city declined and United grew in the late 80's it felt like it swapped the other way. Echoing Keane and the prawn sandwich comments.

I think the united catholic association, probably came about due to busby (being Catholic) and the Irish stars of United at that time and onwards.

Aren't the RAGS the only football team to have met the Pope iirc?

I remember having a day off school and travelling to Ninian Park in Cardiff to see the Pope in the early 80's. He might have met the Cardiff team during that visit? i dont know mind, and tbh i couldnt give a dam ;-)

Can anyone remember what the context of the conversation was with the pope? Sure it had some colourful language if the song is correct.

Think it was big fat ron's team went to visit him and he was too busy to see them?

They said "Do you know who we are?"

And the pontiff said "go away. Who are you anyway?"

(CBeebies remix)

The Pope told them to fuck off when he realised it was a fake Moses with the rags.

The Irish team met him during Italia '90, IIRC. And I'd assume that a few Italian national sides have met him down the years.
