Apparently some reliable sources in Spain (el confidencial) saying they have got Mourinho.

Should be fun.

His record against Pep.

First there was Gollum, and now another character from Lord of the Rings shows up who's connected with Utd.

Just goes to show that even celebrities (well . . . semi-celebrities) can be as deluded, clueless, arrogant and thoughtless as so many average fans of that lot.

(Don't let the video title fool you -- he has nothing but contempt for City).

So the first thing he does is admit to being a glory hunter. Iirc, he was a housemate at university with the boss man himself, Ric.

Sorry I really fucked that up, was writing on my phone.

He lost the other games.

It's Played 15

7 Pep wins, 3 Mourinho wins, 5 draws.

I'd be fine if Mourinho rolls up there and not because of Pep's superior track record.

They need a new manager, sure. But can Mourinho -- or any manager -- sell the club to a better owner? Can he get Woodward fired? Can he pay down debt? Can he fix a completely broken, under-invested Academy? Can he wave a wand and make half the talent disappear and magically replace them? Can he force the other clubs in the Prem to stop investing, buying and improving their sides?

It's so odd to me how so few see that Utd has MULTIPLE, systemic problems that a manager alone cannot fix. While I've never thought Pep was going anywhere but City after Bayern, the number of people slagging him off for taking the "easier job" seem to have completely ignored that Utd is not going to regain its footing as a top club until ALL of those issues are addressed, not just the manager.

My Lord of the Rings boxset is getting burnt first thing tomorrow...might even shit on it too.

I listened until he started on the crass of 92, what a stroker.

His old man needs a talking to, what sort of a dad lets his son support their rivals, he should have kicked him out.

Only cunts go against their dads in such a way *cough @gordondaviesmoustache

Like most raggies he talks of the scum in terms of "we have been" and "we were" and the future as "we should be" and "we have to" - at City it's "we will" and "we are going to"
Still, I like his arrogant complacency- it's a perfect illustration of why they are where they are, without much of a clue how to get out of it- except obviously to do things the "utd way" ie spend £200 million and hope for the best.

It's the same reason why I believe Jose Mourinho, despite what people say, will need to think long and hard about joining United. Will they really back him to the degree he was backed at Chelsea and Real Madrid? Will he really have a "fair crack" at winning trophies or will the Glazer's priorities have him hamstrung from the off?

Excellent post that Matty. I also think Mourinho adds an additional dimension to "what does success look like". For him, it's all about him and his ego. He cannot resist the lure of being feted and fawned over by an obsequious UK media and 694m acolytes. That the Glazers' ambitions are measured on the strength of the P&L account will mean little to him.

It's so odd to me how so few see that Utd has MULTIPLE, systemic problems that a manager alone cannot fix. Brilliant post. In any competitive job market, intelligent and ambitious people make calculated and strategic career moves. To someone with little interest the mu managers job might be considered a good move, anyone with a good knowledge of the state of that club would spot a massive challenge and significant chance of failure! Pep would be stupid to have gone there.

You're right, the problems are a symptom of a deeper malaise at the club, and the powers that be at Utd can't begin to solve them because they are the problem. Unless the owners and the Board spontaneously combust and some divine rag god hits the re-set button they'll continue to screw up.

To a lesser degree Arsenal are trapped in the same destructive cycle.

But we need to put what's happening at City in perspective. Very few owners could do what the Sheikh is doing, he's breaking the mould because he has a long term plan which is not entirely driven by commercial considerations (though commercial considerations underpin what he does) and, of course, because he can.

The Anglo/American form of capitalism (the love of short term return) mitigates against too many clubs adopting the City model.

Notwithstanding that, given Utd's vast wealth and huge head start they really are screwing up on a magnificent scale.

Perhaps Fergusons next book will be entitled "Cups for Cock-ups". I'm sure he'll be allowed to use it again, for a fee.

In all fairness, we were missing Benjani & Vassell, how we supposed to sell tickets without them two??

We don't claim to have one tenth of the World's population as our fan base.

We don't hold on to the odd empty seat as some sort of trophy.

It will be really interesting to see how many turn up and how it's reported.

The game never happened and was forfeited, do you think they will unfurl a murul accross the sir Roland Rat stand like Arsenal did when they knocked down the old North bank?

Spot on there and they've spent £250 million to get where they are.

I think rows of empty card board cut out fans would be just about perfect. The iq in the ground may actually increase.
